Etrian 1:DOE
DOE (Japanese: D.O.E) are strong monsters that appear in Etrian Mystery Dungeon once you unlock the Haunted Woods. There are 32 DOE.
DOE appear near the bottom of dungeons and can move one floor when the Party moves one floor in the dungeon. They tend to move in order to reach the entrance of the dungeon. DOE are a danger to the city of Aslarga, if they reach the surface the city will suffer damage. When this happens, at least one District is damaged, and it is possible to repair it in the Redevelopment menu at Magan's House, for a high amount of Ental, moreover the party will be ejected from the dungeon and it will count as a defeat, so the exploration team will lose Items and Ental. Fortunately, there's no obligation to pay and Districts repair themselves when exploring dungeons, so a good strategy is to quickly go through easy dungeons such as Mysterious Labyrinth. When a District is damaged, it disables some of their functionality:
- Hotel District: Disables "Store" and "Withdraw" at Kasumi's Inn. In addition, Kasumi DOE not give Lunch.
- Market District: Disables "Buy", "Forge" and "Meld".
- Eatery District: Disables "Order" and "Customers".
- Guild District: Disables "Register".
At the same time as DOE appear in the game, the Guildmaster gives the DOE Radar. The DOE Radar shows how many DOE are currently in the dungeon, as well as a color ranging from blue to red, with red indicating that at least one DOE is near a fort, the entrance of the dungeon, or the party.
Using Forts against DOE
It is possible and recommended to use Forts to one's advantage against DOE. Forts can stop DOE without having to face them. If a DOE encounters a fort, it destroys the fort and disappears. Therefore, it is advised to build a fort on floor 1 to keep DOE from entering the town.
In addition, by assigning guards to a fort, if a DOE hits that fort, the fight will start and the player will be able to control the guards against the DOE. If the guards withstand the siege the fort remains, and if they fail the fort will be destroyed without further drawback. In addition, if the exploration team is in a fort with guards while a DOE arrives, it will start a fight with 8 characters against the DOE, 4 player-controlled characters and 4 allied characters (the guards).
Finally, the forts fix the layout of the dungeons, and there can only be 10 DOE spawning in a dungeon as long as the layout is fixed, once 10 DOE are eliminated (either by the forts or by the party killing them), the message "The DOE seems to be no more. DOE shouldn't appear while the dungeon's layout is fixed." will be displayed indicating that no DOE can appear as long as the dungeon's layout is fixed.
Fighting DOE
When the team is in the same zone as a DOE, this is a DOE encounter. It is also possible to escape a DOE encounter in the same zone by taking the stairs. There can be up to 3 DOE in the same zone.
In order to face a DOE, it is necessary to know that they all have protection so that they lose only one HP per attack. In order to remove this protection, one must inflict Ailments (such as Binds, Poison, or Landsknecht's Links) to the DOE. This is why it is absolutely necessary to have characters that can inflict ailments such as Landsknechts, Gunners, or Hexers.
There's 2 sizes of DOE, 1 tile DOE and 3x3 tiles DOE, 1 tile DOE only require only 1 ailment to remove their protection, whereas 3x3 tiles DOE requires two ailments. Moreover, 3x3 tiles DOE destroy walls when they move in the corridors, and their normal attacks hit 3 squares in front of them. Finally, DOE have TP, so after using a certain number of Skills, they can't use others and are forced to make simple attacks.
