Two regular customers

The usual for me, Niralda. How about you?

Yeah, I'll have my usual too.

By the way, do you know which guild took down the monster in the second dungeon?

No idea.

You don't know either, huh? Whoever it was, we owe 'em. It's thanks to them that we're getting these extra portions!

Oh, I'm grateful, all right. You can't beat extra portions!

Sharp-eyed elderly man

You there, young'un. Those weapons of yours seem a mite hard to handle. See there, how there's uneven wear on the hilt? And that one's got a nicked blade! You can't fool a smith's eyes. You can improve the way a weapon handles by tempering it and making repairs as needed. Come down to Chano's to temper your weapons. I'll do right by you.

After the mission Rescue Dr. Stein is available and before the quest Pick a small flower is available

Two hushed men

There was a thief, you say?

I saw him during my watch. Around 22:00, I believe. I saw a man leaving the [unintelligible], carrying a report.

But removing reports from the premises is prohibited.

That it is. I called out to him, to tell him that. And he just ran off without looking my way.

Did you give chase?

Of course. He ran to the edge of town and burnt the report. Once that was done, he drew his sword and came at me.

Was he good?

Pretty skilled, I'd say. Most likely an assassin sent by [unintelligible].

Most likely. I wonder if they thought the [unintelligible] was there. Probably found the report while searching the house.

They just don't know when to quit. Do they think they can keep it a secret forever?

They're probably desperate to protect their own soil. Leaving that aside, though... was [unintelligible] okay?

She wasn't at [unintelligible]. I think she must have been out investigating the [unintelligible].

What about little [unintelligible]?

She was fine. Fast asleep. Unfortunately, the [unintelligible] was lost.

We can always make another. I'm glad that those two are fine. And you, of course.

Of course.

An eager guild

Hey, we're taking that mission, right?

Of course we are.

This is personal for you, isn't it? Yeah, he's a big fan of Sarah's.

I'm telling you, she likes me back!

Great... he's still deluding himself. You know she was just asking questions.

But she seemed so... earnest.

She's just passionate about research. Well, either way, we gotta do something.

Yeah.

Little Sasha's got to be worried, too. Right? I'd hate to see her in tears.

Same.

So let's go help them both out, yeah? It'd boost our reputation for sure.

It's not about that! It's to help Sarah.

Sure, whatever. Just watch out for us...

After accepting the mission Rescue Dr. Stein and before the mission Explore the fourth dungeon is available

Belly-dancer sisters

I'll have the usual. And you, sis?

The usual for me too. How about you?

Oh, same here. The usual for all of us.

Is that going to keep you going tonight?

True, belly dancing burns energy, but... I wouldn't go onstage if I got pudgy.

But Niralda will worry if you don't eat.

The other dishes are too big, though!

Yeah, just dancing wouldn't keep you slim. Like anything here would make you fat.

You can't know that!

Well, the amber boosts your metabolism...

Yep. Which is why I always get meat.

Always on top of the food chain, eh?

Totally. In food and in love...

Shut up! Ugh, I hate that you're right.

You should get yourself a quiet man.

Yeah, a gentle soul. *sigh* Like Magan...

What!?

Seriously!?

Oh, like you don't... Wait, really?

I was gonna go after Mr. Magan!

Does this mean we have to fight for him?

Awww, come on!

I won't back down. Top of the food chain!

Sis, I love you, but there are limits.

You guys! Not my Magan!

He's not yours yet!

That's right. And he is pretty popular.

Great. More rivals...

Eh, that can wait. First, let's eat!

Can't fight or love on an empty stomach!

Nooo! I don't want to fight over love!

After the quest Pick a small flower is available and before reporting the mission Explore the fourth dungeon

Friendly adventurer

Well, if it isn't the [guild] Guild! I've heard all about your successes. What, you don't remember me? How rude. We did the adventuring lesson together. But I forgive you. See, your successes have inspired me. I admit, I lost heart for a while when I couldn't conquer the third dungeon. But then I heard you'd managed to do it, and I was determined not to lose. I'm going to try that third dungeon again. I'm going to conquer it. And I'm going to catch up to you. Just you watch. Oh, and the name's Redwallon. I run the Evergreen Guild. Don't you forget that.

Chano Industries workers

Boy, I'm glad Dr. Stein's safe. I'll have my usual, Niralda.

Same for me. So, what's your connection to Dr. Stein? I didn't think she did work for Chano Industries...

Oh, that's right, you just started work with us. I guess you could call her a... favored co-developer of sorts.

So we contract her to do research for us?

Oh, no, just the opposite, actually. Most of the time, she's the one asking us to develop things based on her work.

I thought she was a labyrinth expert. What kinds of things would she need US to develop based on that?

You haven't read any of her papers, have you? Go out to her labs and give them a look. You'll figure it out.

All right...

Extra-loving regulars

Huh? Hey, Niralda, these are the normal portions. Oh, the extra helpings were last night. Dammit! I'm too late! Dammit... Ah, hell with all of it.

Oh well. They say Dr. Stein's safe, so I guess it's fine.

Yeah, I'll drink to that.

By the way, have you ever had Dr. Stein's cooking?

Nope.

You either, huh? I heard it's incredible. I don't know what's supposed to be so incredible about it, though. Do you?

No idea.

You either, huh? I'm jealous of whoever got to try it. I wish I could...

Oh yeah, me too. Especially if it's free and comes in extra large portions.

That's not what I mean. Whoever gets to eat her cooking... that means they're in a relationship with her, get it?

Relationship? Like how do you mean?

I'm saying, whoever it is might be her boyfriend!

Interesting.

I want to be Dr. Stein's man! I want to eat her cooking! I don't care if it's free or comes with extra portions!

So pay her.

Huh, I hadn't thought of that! Yeah, I'd pay to be her... Hey, wait, that wouldn't make me her boyfriend!

Two quarrelsome men

No way. I don't forgive anyone who badmouths Chano, even if they are a good customer of ours.

Won't he be in trouble if the town gets attacked? We protect you, but we gotta pay for forts? What's the deal there?

We can't work for free. Us fort builders gotta eat. What's wrong with charging for what we do?

Adventurers don't work for free either. We risk our lives out there! All we do for you, and you want money out of us?

What did you say!?

You wanna take this outside?

Wait, you two! Please don't fight!

M-Ms. Beth!?

M-Ms. Elizabeth!?

The adventurer is correct. But what our craftsman says is also true. The labor and materials of our forts must be covered.

You hear that!?

Shut it, you.

Of the required fees, Chano covers all the labor in construction and demolition. But we must charge for materials used.

That's what I don't get. Why do you make the adventurers pay for that?

Because those materials are gathered by adventurers. You wish to be paid for what you risk your lives to acquire, yes?

......

In a way, that money is returned to the adventurers. Chano covers the labor costs, so we are not profiting from the venture.

Forget profits, you guys come out behind. If you keep on like that, who's gonna pay us construction workers?

Your wages are safe. They are provided for by the purchases that adventurers make from our retail shop.

...If you say so.

Both of your professions are important to us. My father has considered this matter carefully. Do please understand.

I get it, Ms. Elizabeth. Don't look so glum! I lost my cool, and I'm sorry.

I'm sorry for what I said too. Use our forts well, and you should be able to make back more than what you paid to build it.

Yeah, you're right. I'll keep putting in those fort orders, and I'll keep buying from your shop, so don't worry.

Thank you. Chano Industries appreciates your continued support. May you meet with good luck on your next adventure.

There's no arguing with Ms. Elizabeth.

Yeah, there sure isn't.

Meat-eating sisters

I'll have the meat today, Niralda.

Same for me, since it's a lean cut.

I'll have the same thing!

Relax. You're still a child.

I think you meant, 'you're still young!'

You're both older than Mr. Magan...

Dammit...

Ugh...

I'm the only one of us younger than him!

Well, some men marry older women.

That's right. He deserves one.

If you saaaaay soooo.

You know, Ms. Astoria was...

She was younger. She died at 16.

That's younger than I am...

I'm sure it's still painful for him.

Not that he ever shows it.

......

I wish I could go comfort him now!

I told you not to jump the gun!

What was Ms. Astoria like?

Pretty, kind... They still talk about her.

She was wise and courageous, too.

So she was a saint? What hope do I have?

Don't complain. You're the youngest of us.

That's right. And the kindest.

But I'm not pretty or smart or...

Though I gotta say, I'm a real looker.

And my curves are to die for.

Yeah, but still, against that...

Love is like a play without a script.

Huh. You got wise in your old age.

Good point! I won't give up!

Attagirl! Wait, I'm wise in my what?

Oh, nothing. Don't worry about it.

Ooh, our meal's here! It's huge!

Finally! This looks delicious.

I don't think I can finish mine...

I'll... I'll eat it! I'll finish it!

A bold claim.

I don't know if bold is the word for it.

Just watch! I'll prove myself right now!

Vulgar-looking youth

Hey, can you spare a moment? I'm looking for a man named Mosken. Do you know him? ...All right. Sorry to bother you.

Dull-witted young man

Hey, um... Have you ever thought about making your weapons stronger?

I'm a smith over at Chano Industries. I got tasked with melding recently, and I'm loving it so much that I had to share.

If you have any enchanted weapons or shields, maybe think about melding it instead of just selling it off.

I'm still young, but I know I can handle whatever you throw at me. I learned from our best craftsman, Mr. Gen.

A junior staffer

Aha! So this is where you went to. I'll have what he's having, Niralda.

What are you so hot and bothered for? Ah... you've been to the labs. Read the reports, did you?

Who exactly is Dr. Stein? Labyrinth experts are people who excavate dungeons and decipher ancient texts, yeah?

Generally, yes. But that's not all Dr. Stein can do. She's also versed in geology, mineralogy, biology, on and on.

I'd understand if she was an old woman who'd devoted her life to study. But she's so young... And so cute...

Hahaha. I couldn't believe it myself when I first saw her. But she's the real thing. And she's not lying about her age, either.

She must be what people mean when they say genius...

She's got a gift, it's true. But what sets her apart is her ability to keep working hard, harder than anyone else.

So she's naturally gifted, and puts in all that hard work to boot... Yeah, no one can beat that.

Still, she's not perfect. She's not that good at exploring dungeons, and I hear she's a real slob around the house.

Yeah, but who cares about being the world's best housekeeper? Top scientist, now that's a title worth having.

Then work harder than she does, if you think you can. You're still young, maybe you can do it. Not that I'm old!

You're right. I'll learn what I can from you and the doctor for a while. And one day, I'll outdo you both.

That's the spirit. And me, I'll work hard not to make it easy on you!

After accepting the mission Explore the fifth dungeon and before accepting the mission Reach the Yggdrasil's base

Kasumi's Inn staff

I didn't think anyone would throw me a farewell party. I'm... touched.

We didn't think you'd become a ninja!

Did a customer really inspire you?

You always talked about it, but...

It was my dream to go on adventures without being tied down by anything... Not that I'm sick of Kasumi's Inn!

Oh, we know.

Don't worry about us.

Yeah. The inn's in good hands!

I know not everyone could make it, but... I wonder if the boss lady will drop by.

She said she didn't like goodbyes.

It's not like you're dying, anyway.

She tears up surprisingly easy...

Hm... I didn't see her this morning, so I was hoping to say goodbye to her here. But I'll visit her another time.

Yeah, it's not like you're moving away.

You might bump into her anywhere.

Say, which inn will you be staying at?

Anywhere but Kasumi's. I have a feeling if I stayed there, it'd make me want to come back.

You always can, you know.

You're welcome there anytime!

We'll be waiting for you!

So this isn't a farewell party, then. ...You're such good friends. I'll have to find some adventuring buddies now.

Good luck, ninja newbie.

Newbie! Hah!

That's hilarious!

Stout-hearted sisters

When are we going to evacuate?

But... we weren't attacked?

I couldn't think of leaving Mr. Magan.

......

I heard that 'damn' under your breath.

That's low, sis.

I-I was only thinking of my sisters...

Go on, pull the other one.

No liar is worthy of Mr. Magan.

...All right. Let's try this.

What's your scheme?

I'm never leaving this town.

We'll start a fan club.

A fan club... for Mr. Magan!?

Ooh, me! I'll join!

A lot of girls are serious about him.

Yeah, that's true enough.

I know I am!

One of them might beat us to him.

And this will... prevent that?

How?

Because he'll belong to the fan club.

And no one gets to cut in line!

But then he won't be all mine...

That's right. He belongs to all of us.

I'll see if I can scare up some members.

I don't like this. I'm not joining.

But you just said you would.

What did you say before about liars?

But...! Aw, dang it...

Then it's decided. We're all in.

No objections here!

I should've thought this through...

Well, you don't want to overthink it.

No more than you did. We need heart.

Uh-huh... it's our hearts that matter...

Did you just say I overthought this?

No, I said we needed strong hearts.

That's what's really important.

Didn't I hear, 'more than you did'?

What? No. So, what are we ordering?

But I don't know if it's enough...

Meat! In honor of our new fan club!

But you always get meat. Me too, I guess.

I'll have fish. I hear it makes you smart.

You really are easy to manipulate.

But that's what makes her so adorable.

I'm going to smarten up!

After reporting the mission Explore the fifth dungeon and before the mission Master the seventh dungeon is available

Inquiring patron

Hey. You there. You know the shady- looking fellow who was looking for a man name of Mosken?

> I know him.

  • Ah, you do know him. Would you happen to know where he is now?

> I don't know him.

...So you don't know him. I've seen him at the Amber Restaurant a lot, but not since yesterday. Seems he was a bounty hunter, and this Mosken guys he was looking for had a price on his head. Did he manage to capture Mosken, or did he just leave for parts unknown? Which could it have been...?

Man with an insect cage

This insect cage? No, I'm not putting monsters in it. That's a funny joke, though. Collecting bugs is my job. Some of the nobles are real connoisseurs, and they pay top dollar for rare insects. I heard about this town from a gunner friend. He said it was hot, and I thought hey, maybe I could catch some bugs there. Plus, there's a lot of undeveloped areas here and there. I think I might catch some never-before-seen insects. But he wasn't kidding when he said it was hot here. Maybe I'll order a cold drink to go with my meal.

Regulars in luck

I'm a lucky guy. It's not payday yet, so I thought I'd settle for normal portions. But there's a celebration going on!

Yeah, we lucked out.

Right? I'm gonna chalk our luck up to the guidance of Old Man Refills.

Who's Old Man Refills?

That's what I call my gut. He can take in big portions without feeling heavy after I'm done. I named him out of respect.

Oh, nice one! Thanks, Old Man Refills!

You know, the food we serve at our shop isn't anywhere near as good as the food here. How does that shop make money?

No idea.

You either, huh? Well, whatever. Our bosses make money, so the pay's fine. But those staff meals... yecch.

The worst. I wouldn't want large portions OR refills.

Right? It breaks my heart every time we have a staff luncheon. Eating that stuff made Old Man Refill sick.

Poor old man.

When that happens, I have to take him to visit Dr. Niralda here. Her food's like his medicine.

Oh, I hear that's tasty! The sweet frosting on pastries, right?

You're thinking of cinnamon.

After accepting the mission Reach the Yggdrasil's base and before accepting the mission Master the seventh dungeon

Contrasting coworkers

What gives! Why didn't you tell me about him? Dr. Stein's old mentor, I mean.

Oh, Professor Randi? That's odd... Didn't I tell you?

First I heard was from Ms. Elizabeth just now. I'm a huge fan of his!

Oh... I didn't know that. Have you read all of his books?

Of course. I have a first edition of his bestseller, The Tale of the Remote Forest.

That's a rare one. I hear they didn't print many at the start. And now it's out in other languages...

Yeah, but Professor Randi's not great because he's famous. It's because he's inspired so many people!

Inspired, huh? Well, they do say dungeon research took off after his book was published. I wonder how much he made...

It's always money with you. If you had that much money, what would you spend it on?

I'd buy a skyship and spend my days traveling the world. The new Chano model, of course.

Wh... What are you talking about?

Oops. Slip of the tongue. Let's pretend you didn't hear that. This is my treat, okay? Forget all about it.

Nice! Thanks for the meal!

Hushed group of men

So... what happened to that bounty hunter?

We asked him to keep things secret and sent him home. He was no assassin, and it's what [unintelligible] wanted anyway.

Yeah, [unintelligible] doesn't like needless killing. But won't they run into each other on the skyship?

No, they put [unintelligible] on dungeon ferry duty a while back. He doesn't make international trips now. He'll be fine.

You don't think they'll run into each other at the port?

He's been busy since they found that new dungeon. I checked to make sure he wasn't around when I took our man there.

You think he'll give up that easily...? Maybe he's still lurking around. Or maybe he might come back...

No chance. It'll be fine. I watched his skyship leave, and I [unintelligible] so he wouldn't [unintelligible].

Well in that case, yeah, he's never coming back. He knows you'll remember his face. But what about his friends?

I showed him [unintelligible] and told him we were always watching. He's seen proof that I wasn't bluffing, too.

So he can't let anything slip, then. Okay, you've convinced me. We won't need to worry about him for a while.

Now I have a question for you. How's our old friend doing? Has he devoted himself to his adventures?

Yeah, don't worry about that. I bumped into him when he was coming back from the dungeons. He's already high level.

I'm glad things are working out for him. Guess we can't call him a newbie anymore, huh?

After reporting the mission Reach the Yggdrasil's base and before accepting the mission Master the seventh dungeon

Don Chano and craftsmen

I'll have this one, thank you. Go on, order what you'd like! It's because of you that we finished the project, don'tcha know.

Don't mind if I do. I'll have this one.

I'll have what the boss is having.

I know what I want. I'll place the orders.

I know I put you all through a lot. I'm curious, what part did you find it hardest to work on?

Having to make it light, yet durable.

We had trouble with both the balloon and the ship's body.

I see. The balloon needed to withstand extreme weather and air currents, and the ship had to be large but light.

But it was worth the effort.

Yes, we were able to take what we learned and apply it to the portable boat.

It was worth the effort of procuring materials as well. If that monster in the second dungeon wasn't defeated...

Our orders are placed... What's this?

What's the matter?

There's a reserved sign here.

Oh, so there is. I hadn't noticed.

...Those ladies are glaring at us, boss.

The Amber Restaurant belly dancers?

I wonder if they reserved the seat.

How awful of me. I must go and apologize to them.

We don't know for sure it was theirs.

I'll to ask them.

I'll go with you to apologize.

Thank you.

You have very fine staff. They are quick to take action, and they show careful consideration for others.

Why, if it isn't Ms. Kasumi herself. You're very right, and they're superb craftsmen as well.

Sir Chano, may I have a word with you in private? It's the [unintelligible] that you're [unintelligible], is it not?

H-How did you...!? That information was top secret, don'tcha know...

Shhh... If it's meant to be such a secret, then you mustn't raise your voice.

But... But I...

I only need a moment of your time. it is urgent, I'm afraid. Ms. Elizabeth is also waiting for us.

M-My Lizzie!? What's going on!? What's happening!?

You will know soon enough.

Fan club sisters

Any luck finding members, #2 Fan?

It's going okay--Wait! I'm the #2 Fan?

I'm the #1 Fan, right? I joined first!

No, as founder and president, I'm #1.

But I'm the one gathering members!

No fair!

Okay, how about this? We're all #1.

Then why have numbers at all...?

Yeah! If we're all #1, that's fair.

Right? I'm probably the #1 Brain, too.

As if.

So what does our fan club do?

I'm glad you asked. Voila...!

What's with the reserved seat?

I get it! We all eat together!

Tsk, tsk. It's much better than that.

I don't like the sound of this...

Much better? Hmm...

Mr. Magan was just sitting there.

I knew it.

What!? Th-Then... that means...

That's right. The seat's still warm.

You've got to be kidding me!

I-I want to sit there!

Right? I reserved it to keep it warm.

Here we go with this again...

But it'd only work for the first sitter.

Right. That's a problem for a big club.

How about rock-paper-scissors for it?

Good idea! Then there's no hard feelings.

You're smarter than you look.

Did you need the than you look part?

Let's go call the other members... Oh no!

Wait! S-Stop!

Awww.

He sat on it...

That's horrible...

You'll get another chance.

I don't know... Maybe we won't...

Ugh! I hate him!

Sis, I don't think it was on purpose.

I'll never forgive that Don Chano!

Guild making preparations

Hey, did you hear about the guild that went to the Yggdrasil's base?

Yeah, where have you been? You're talking about the [guild] Guild, right? It's no surprise they made it there.

It's so frustrating. We would've been the first ones if we hadn't run into trouble at the 24th floor of the Ravine.

Hey, no what ifs. Especially not with mystery dungeons. We didn't have what it took, end of story.

Yeah... well, we'll be the first ones there next time. They found another dungeon, didn't they?

Not yet, not exactly. The [guild] Guild surveyed the Yggdrasil's base and couldn't find an entrance anywhere.

So that's why there's no mission yet. I can't wait until they figure out where it is...

What are you talking about? We're going to be the ones to find it! Let's go take a crack at the Torrential Ravine!

H-Hey, wait up! I'm coming with you!

After the mission Master the seventh dungeon is available and before completing Muspelheim

Evacuating family

Um, Mom? Why are we leaving?

Because this town isn't safe anymore. It... hasn't been safe for a long time. Even before the DOE first came...

But we don't need to worry about the DOEs. There's lots of adventurers in Aslarga! They can defeat the DOEs!

They found a lot of DOE amber, honey. There's more of it than there are of us. So the regular people have to leave.

So... can we come back if the adventurers defeat all those DOEs?

...Yes, if that happens, we'll come back after all those DOEs are defeated.

Okay!

Wry-faced man

Aren't they carefree... Oh, no, I didn't mean you. I meant those regulars there. Especially under the circumstances... Me? I'm a wholesaler at the marketplace. I sell fish to this restaurant. Though I haven't been selling much lately... Have you been to the river that flows into town? It's a disaster. The water's turned hot, and all over the river you can see fish gone belly-up. Nothing's fit to eat anymore. The same is happening to other foodstuffs too. I bet a lot of the food made here was using stashed-away ingredients. The amber helps the ingredients keep, but it won't last forever. The way things are, food's a scarce resource. I'm leaving town. Business is plummeting. When I came to tell Niralda, she... you know. She's a real softie, that lady. I hope you savor every bite. Even if you stick around, this might be the last day you get to eat at the Amber Restaurant.

Concerned regulars

I'll have my usual, Niralda. You?

Yeah, me too. The usual.

So you heard how they want us to evacuate, right? Are you going to go along with it?

Nope.

Right? I couldn't live in a town without an Amber Restaurant. The portion size means nothing without that flavor.

I wonder if Dr. Stein's evacuating...

Boy, that'd be a hard choice. Dr. Stein or the Amber Restaurant... I can't choose! What would be a hard choice for you?

Large portions or second helpings... I just can't choose!

You can have both. You usually do...

Insect-catching man

This butterfly? Nah, it's not rare. Neither is this one, or that bug. I probably won't sell any of these. So why did I catch them? Well, I just felt sorry for the critters. Yeah... you've only been in the dungeons underground, so you don't know what it's like in the forests on the surface. Those forests are full of the corpses of the creatures that used to live there. It's because of all this heat. No creature can survive if it gets too hot. Most of the insects have wings, but only a few can travel long distances. I'm taking these insects and leaving town. I'll release them someplace where they'll be more comfortable. I never thought such a pretty place like this would actually be hell...

Adventurer-looking girl

Am I an adventurer? No, I'm not. Though I'm wearing enough gear to go mountain climbing. So am I a mountain climber? Also no. And I'm not into camping, either. I like to hike through forests as a hobby. That's hike, not explore. You might call me a hiker, if you had to. But... I can't now. I'm going to be evacuating soon. Leaving Aslarga for some other town. And I wanted to eat here while I still had the chance. The Amber Restaurant was my favorite diner in town...

  • sigh* I'm already saying goodbye to

the bustle of this place... to the great food... and to Ms. Niralda. I'm going to miss this place...

After accepting the mission Master the seventh dungeon and before completing Muspelheim

Whispering inn staff

The DOE amber's gone public.

The whole world will know soon.

The evacuees will see to that.

No point in the assassins anymore.

Think they'll get desperate?

Desperate enough to drop amber on us?

That won't happen. It's all at the tree.

Oh, right. They couldn't get at it.

I sure hope not. That'd be bad news...

It's like having one foot in the grave.

You mean us, or this town? Heh... sorry.

That was uncalled for.

We can't rest until the DOEs are gone.

Yeah, and they already lifted the seal.

We just have to wait this out.

No. There is something we can do.

But why would they send assassins now?

What are you getting at?

Just wait. He'll be here soon.

He'll be here?

Who's he? Another assassin?

Hey! It's been a while! I haven't seen you two since the farewell party. How've things been?

I'm sorry for calling you out here.

Hey, it's the newbie ninja!

He's hardly a newbie anymore.

That's right. Maybe you don't realize, but I'm a top-flight ninja now. So show some respect!

I wish we were as strong as you about now.

Huh!? What do you mean by that?

Are we going to... become ninja?

That's what I'm told. I was asked to give you adventuring tips so you can help defeat Muspell.

And there it is.

So that's what you meant... I get it.

No objections here. Go easy on us, okay?

You're awfully calm about this. We're starting at level 1. I hear the seventh dungeon's open... This will get rough.

Understood. Don't pull any punches.

This brings back memories of training...

I'm ready. So, what'll we do for a guild?

I left the guild I was with. I thought we could form a new one.

We'll need a guild name, then.

Like there's any question about that!

Oh yeah... good point.

I see we all had the same thought. Do we all want to say it together?

Kasumi's Inn!

Kasumi's Inn!

Kasumi's Inn!

Resolute sisters

Isn't that the dashing Sir Don Chano?

Wait. Didn't you say you hated him?

Yeah...

He's a good tipper, though.

He made a bundle off the new skyships.

Does that make him upper class?

More like a parvenu.

Those pretty lips say some foul things.

Yeah, sis. Harsh.

Oh? So you don't want me to treat you?

Ah, the dashing Sir Parvenu!

I'm getting the priciest dish on the menu!

That's called opportunism, you know.

Come on now, don't be like that.

Yeah. Mmm... juicy, tender meat.

Niralda! Three of your finest meats!

Yes!

The juiciest... the tenderest...

Nothing better than prime, young meat.

Is that why you're into Mr. Magan?

Huh? But Mr. Magan's not fat.

She meant a well-off young man, sis.

AND provost. Of a booming town.

You care about that stuff?

Of course. Mr. Magan, he's upper class.

There's a rumor that he's royalty.

Mr. Magan!? Really!?

No wonder his bearing is so graceful.

I know, right? He's no commoner.

Oh no... Why would he ever want me!?

I guess we're stuck as his fan club.

That's for sure.

Why're you two so deflated today?

I just don't want to fight my sisters.

He's not the only man out there.

What!? You're just letting it go?

It's the mature thing to do.

Once you've been around the block...

...Are you scared he'll reject you?

Uh...

Well...

You two have hearts of glass.

I hate it when she's right.

So what are you going to do?

I'll take rejection, if it comes.

Not the best idea.

You're just going to get hurt.

I don't care. It'll settle things.

How I envy youth...

Youth will surprise you.

I'll do it after Muspell's defeated.

Yeah, you need a good opening.

It's cute how she's setting conditions.

Niralda! Please bring my meat! Quick!

O meat, grant my dear sister courage!

O meat, grant her a strong heart!

Yay, meat! I'm gonna give it all I got!

Three sociable ladies

Yoohoo! Can I bother you for a second?

Our town is facing a crisis right now.

It's all Muspell's fault.

Let's defeat Muspell together!

We might not be adventurers...

But we have candy!

Obtained key item: Candy!

You can have some, if you'd like.

We'd give you something nicer if we could.

But all we have on us is candy.

There'll be more if you defeat Muspell.

So try your best. We'll be rooting for you!

And we'll have lots of candy.

Dr. Stein's devotees

Hey, it's Dr. Stein.

Looking cute as always.

Hm, something's different today.

She's sitting way off to one side.

She's looking down, but not at the menu.

Hey... I think she's crying!

You're kidding! What happened?

Go over there and ask her!

I don't think this is a good time!

Oh, it's that innkeeper, Kasumi.

She's sitting next to Dr. Stein.

Shhh! Quiet down and listen...

Sarah... I'm sure you're worried about Sasha.

I know it'd be safer for her to evacuate. But...

But you can't leave her in the care of strangers. Most of the citizens, myself included, will not be evacuating.

Neither will I. I made a promise a year ago that I'd protect this town. Sasha, though, she...

She has nothing to do with it. Is that what you were going to say?

...What?

You are like family to Sasha. Yet even so, you insist that you will remain in Aslarga.

But...

Say she did evacuate safely, yet you died, and her father remained missing. A young girl, all alone... Would she be happy?

...She's still just three years old. I'm sure with enough time, she'd...

So there would be pain, but it would fade over time, allowing her to find happiness. These are a selfish woman's thoughts.

Wh...!

But not evacuating, or leaving the choice to a young girl, would also be selfish. Every option is that of a selfish woman.

Then... what am I supposed to do? I don't know... I don't understand...

It's simple. Find the way that will bring the most happiness. For Sasha, and for you.

For... me too...?

Yes. If Sasha is happy, then you will be happy as well. And the reverse is also true.

The reverse...

The one way you can both be happy is to defeat Muspell, save Aslarga, and live together happily afterward.

......

Rather than worry, consider happiness. Rather than fret, work at happiness. Isn't hard work your strong suit?

Kasumi...

When everything is settled, come to the inn. Your favorite room, the one with the view of the tree, is always open for you.

...Thank you.

I'll be waiting.

News-discussing regulars

Hey, uh... was that thing last night a dream?

It was not a dream.

Really!? So that all-you-can-eat thing was real...

All-you-can-eat is amazing!

...I just don't remember it at all. I don't remember anything! I drank too many Amber Cocktails.

That's a damn shame.

That's it. I'm never having another Amber Cocktail again.

Dr. Stein loves that stuff!

What did you say!? Niralda! Go ahead and add an Amber Cocktail to my order!

So you haven't learned...

Hey, if I keep drinking it, I might build up a tolerance.

That'll never happen.

Niralda? Can I get that heavy on the amber, light on the pills?

What's the point in drinking that...?

After completing Muspelheim

Unhurried sisters

So what are you going to do?

Will you really confess your love?

I'm... not going to.

But why not?

You seemed so excited about it.

......

It's probably for the best.

At least you didn't end up getting hurt.

I... like someone else now.

What!?

That was unexpected. Who? The captain?

...The Guildmaster.

Whuh!?

Seriously!?

Wait, why are you two so shocked?

I'm after the Guildmaster too.

Are we fighting over a man again?

Awww! Noooo!

I won't back town. Top of the food chain!

Sis, I love you, but there are limits.

Wait, why are you both after him?

After what I saw at the feast last night?

He was crying his eyes out!

I saw that too. That was why...

It was so out of character for him.

You love those hidden facets to people.

We all like him for the same reason...

I wish I was comforting him now!

Hey! Like I said, there are limits!

Let the next battle for love begin!

A prince and princess

Heavens... They serve Royal Banquets here?

I'm not certain if it's officially on the menu, but I thought I'd try asking, and she made it for me.

How wonderful! It's definitely a meal fit for a prince and princess!

I enjoy the indulgence of feeling like a sovereign as much as I can. Especially since we're not truly royalty.

Noooo... Don't spoil the mood!

Yoohoo, can I bother you for a moment?

We brought you what we promised.

Here's the candy. Remember to share!

Obtained key item: Candy!

You're going out again? Remarkable!

Isn't it? I wish my son was like you.

Good luck. We're rooting for you.

Oh, another adventurer's here!

Don't worry. We've plenty of candy.

Now then, to business.

Yoohoo! Excuse me!

Do you know the guild who beat Muspell?

They're called [guild].

And this is their favorite candy!

It's what helped them beat Muspell!

It's [guild]-endorsed!

Just 10en apiece. Cheap, isn't it?

Buy 100, and we'll throw in 10 free.

How many can I put you down for?

Kasumi's guild

You did great. We couldn't defeat Muspell, but I think we did help the [guild] Guild a little.

It was tough, starting at that dungeon.

We were just 1st-level ninja...

All those Yggdrasil Leaves we used!

It's not like we had a choice. We needed battles that would give us a lot of experience to level up fast.

The boss would've done that, but...

The dungeon boss? I wanted to fight it.

And Muspell, too.

We should try the ninth dungeon next. They say it's haunted by the restless dead, so Muspell might be down there.

Muspell, huh? Are we strong enough?

I think we should give it a shot.

We'll be fine. We're not newbies anymore.

No, we're not, but it'll still be tough. Especially with a party entirely of ninjas...

Hey, an all-ninja party isn't bad!

I've seen other parties like ours.

Yeah, like that all-medic guild.

Hahaha, now that takes courage. Alright, the ninth dungeon it is. But... before we go, I want to say something.

I know. This is the last time, right?

That's what we were planning on.

You were going to leave us, huh?

I wanted to repay Ms. Kasumi for letting me follow my dream... That's why I plan to keep her safe.

Yeah, since she's always on the run.

I know I said I'd protect myself, but...

I want to save everyone else, too.

You guys...

Let's get ready for the next adventure!

We can't leave anything behind here.

What are you standing around for?

...Right!

Grumbling adventurers

We're the guild third-stringers, huh?

Yep. Always on reserve in town.

Not even second-string!?

The defense team's second-string.

Yeah, they might actually move up.

Huh. Don't they get lots of experience?

Yeah. They move on once they catch up.

Like they're waiting on the bench.

So, like a pinch hitter, then.

When do we get to join the second-string?

It's all up to the Four Kings.

Who's that? Monsters? Embermen?

No, the main party.

You know, because there's four of them?

Oh, I get it now! That's neat.

I'm sick of waiting in town.

I want to go to the dungeons!

So why don't you just go?

I'd get in trouble without permission.

Yeah, if our level was suspiciously high...

You could go to the Mysterious Forest.

We could?

What do you mean?

Going into that dungeon resets your level.

What!?

Are you serious!?

Yeah. I was just out there.

Okay, we're going too!

Contact us once the Four Kings get back.

Good luck!

Captain Mosken

What's up? I'm between pickups at the moment. This Amber Cocktail? Nah, I'm not drinking it, 'cause it's not mine. Thanks to you, I think the heat's off me. You know, since the thing about the Yggdrasil's base is out in the open. Though maybe they didn't feel like paying up anymore, heh. Can't believe I survived. I owe you and Ms. Kasumi a lot. Magan, the Guildmaster, and Astoria too. If they hadn't founded Aslarga, I'd be pushing up daisies by now. I plan to pay everyone back by rendering my services as a skyship captain. That's how I'll honor Astoria, too. I know it's common to lionize the dead, but... what they say about Astoria is true. She was young, but very strong. You know this mug of mine is enough to scare off any normal folks, but she wasn't afraid at all. She saw the scar on my chest and called it my badge of honor. I thought, this girl's got some steel on her. I took a liking to her then and promised I'd buy her a drink here, but... I never did get around to that. Well, I'd better head back to work soon. Go ahead and knock that drink back if you want.

Returning family

See, Mom? I told you the adventurers would beat the DOEs!

You were right. There wasn't even any damage to our house... The adventurers of this town are incredible.

I'm going to be an adventurer when I grow up. I'll protect you, Mom!

Well, thank you, honey. In that case, you'd better eat well, so you grow up big and strong.

Okay!

After completing the Glacial Cave

Unchanged regulars

Whew, am I stuffed. I had the large portions today, so I'm extra satisfied.

Super duper satisfied.

Y'know, I think this place is going to be pretty quiet from here on out. I say we start our own guild soon!

Not gonna happen.

I guess not. It was stupid to wait until there's nothing to fight. I've never even held a sword before.

I've never carried a shield.

But you know, I think there is a project we can get started on.

Oh, I agree.

Right? But what can we do?

What we always do.

What we... Are you talking about... You are, aren't you?

Yep.

You know... you're right. That is the only thing we can do. So let's not waste any time getting started!

This is exciting.

Niralda! I'd like second helpings of my usual, in large portions, please!

Me too. Second helpings, large portions, all that. Three cheers for large portions! Three cheers for second helpings!

Fishmonger

All right, Niralda. I have the fish you ordered around back. Hey there. You're lucky you're eating at the Amber Restaurant today. How's the fishing? Well, I haven't been able to catch any just yet. The fish I brought today are imported. I had them flown here by skyship, using amber to preserve them for a while. I had them fly over some young fish too, to release into the river once the water cools down. It'll happen eventually. Be sure to order some of the fish I brought! Well, I have places to be, but I'll see you around.

> Yellowwallon of Evergreen.

  • You're... doing this on purpose, aren't you? Hmph.

Bug collector

Oh, hi. Yeah, I came back when I heard the temperature was starting to drop to normal. It's really cooled down. I won't be such a sweaty mess out there anymore. Me or my gunner friend, heh. Yeah, I'm out collecting insects again. Oh... you think I won't be able to catch any because it's colder now? Ah, but you see, my target's the Yggdrasil amber now. I'm hoping to find an ancient insect trapped in that sap. No, it'll be all right. I won't confuse a DOE for an insect. Though that's a funny joke.

Keen-eyed elderly smith

Returning adventurer girl

The bustle... the food... Niralda's looking energetic as usual, too. I really am back in Aslarga... Say, aren't you... Do you remember me?

  • I figured you wouldn't remember. We didn't talk for that long. Hiker. I was the hiker.

> The camper.

  • I figured you wouldn't remember. We didn't talk for that long. Hiker. I was the hiker.

> The hiker.

  • That's right! The hiker girl. I'm glad you remembered.

I'm planning to hike through the forest later, but... there's still DOE remnants out there, huh? So Magan told me to have some adventurers escort me when I went. And if I have to have escorts, I want them from the strongest guild. Do you know anyone in [guild]?

Well, hello! If it isn't the [guild] Guild. You here for a bite, too? Same here. I found myself out of the dungeon when I came to, so I thought I'd come grab something to eat. I don't remember what happened. Someone must have been fighting monsters in my shop, and I got mixed up in the fray. If it was just monsters, I'd have my Red Lions take care of them. But adventurers coming around gets my hopes up. I dream that one of them will say after taking out the monster, 'Are you hurt, milady?' someday. Though what I hear more often is, 'Hey! You with the whip! Help me out here!'

No, it's fine. They'd only worry if they saw me. I can tell my husband is well without seeing him.

The young miss has grown into a strong woman. She was undaunted by an angry adventurer as she dealt with him earlier.

Yes, she truly has. She cried often when she was small and things didn't go her way. But I see she's matured.

Did she write to you of the altercation between the craftsman and the adventurer? It was a sight to behold.

I'd attribute it to the people she's met in this town. Coming here made me see that... *cough* *cough*

Oh! It's almost time for your medicine, Madam. Would you like an appetizer first? The food here is excellent.

Did you read Dr. Stein's report? The one called The Legend of the Four Strongest Embermen?

Yeah, I read it. The Utopian Lord, the top Emberman... It sounds interesting.

Yeah. I have to wonder how strong it might be, and what kind of rare material you can get from it.

What kind of dungeon would this Utopian Lord be in charge of, you think?

It'd have to be one where your level resets, and where you can't take anything inside... An extreme challenge.

But that's the difficulty of the dungeon. It has nothing to do with the Emberman. I'd guess the exact opposite.

So... an ordinary dungeon, but with very strong monsters in it. That's your guess?

That's it. It's probably the dungeon they call the Forbidden Room in mystery dungeon literature.

The Forbidden Room!? This is the first I've heard of it... How do you know about that? Did you learn it from Dr. Stein?

No, I read about it in a book at the labs. I've been at them for about half a year, and I've only scratched the surface.

With the size of that library, it can't be easy reading the entire thing. But why were you reading them...?

I'd never be as great as Dr. Stein if I didn't. Didn't you say that was your goal? To surpass her?

...Think I'll start reading those books now.

Ah, yes. You were the only smith then. And now you're in charge of all those apprentices...

You know, I'm thinking of hanging it up soon. I feel it's time to leave things to the next generation.

Wh-What are you talking about!? It's much too soon to retire!

...Times are changing. I'm sure you can see it too. You've always been good at reading the signs.

I know what you're getting at, Gen. Chano Industries has been focusing on technology, because that's what's next.

Yes. All these communicators and radars... I could never make those even if I tried. That's what the next generation is for.

But you can't go on an adventure with those alone. You need a sword and shield to defend yourself.

That's true, but...

Gen, I'll retire someday myself. And I intend to have Elizabeth take over when I do, don'tcha know.

Ms. Beth? That's a bold choice. But it does sound like something you'd do.

I don't know when that'll happen, but until it does, I hope you'll be there to support her and Chano Industries.

I'm sorry to drag you out here. It was just a bit difficult to talk at the labs. It's about Sasha, you see.

You want to evacuate her, right? But you're planning to stay in town... I'm against leaving Sasha alone.

I don't want that either. That's what I wanted to discuss with you... Can you return to the university with Sasha?

Am I being dismissed?

No, it's not like that. It's really not, but...

I spent a year on this research. Please allow me the courtesy of finishing it. And I don't want to be separated from Sasha.

Sarah, please don't make this difficult for me. We might still be attacked by DOEs. Aren't you also worried for Sasha?

Of course I am! But we need to find a way for all three of us to be happy.

I... come again?

You heard me. It's something Kasumi said to me. She said if we're not aiming for that, our selfishness will hurt Sasha.

Hm... I see.

It's crucial for Sasha to have a sister figure like me, and to have her father by her side.

Yes, I know that much, but--

And for the two of us, it's just as essential both to have Sasha at our side and to continue our research here.

That's also true, but--

You know, I read the transcription of what you've been deciphering this past year. And I found several mistranslations.

What!? Y-You did?

Yes. There were no mistakes in the methods to lift the seals, but I'd call that a miracle amongst the other errors.

I-I didn't know. Given that this is coming from you, I know you're not mistaken...

You want to decipher the remaining texts to rewrite your banned book, yes?

Y-Yes, that's true...

You need me, Professor. I need Sasha. And Sasha needs you.

I certainly will!

Ah, is this the [guild] Guild here for pre-adventure meal? I've also come for something to eat. But I wasn't sure about coming here... Niralda always brings out portions so large that I can't finish them. Yet here I am after all. The food here is simply too good to resist. Now then, what to order... Oh.

Yo, Mr. Magan. You got a minute?

Taking my menu from me before you say a word is a rather unusual greeting.

Sorry 'bout that. Us adventurers don't got all the manners of you management types.

What can I do for you?

I hear you gave the orders to stick the forceful return thing on our DOE radars.

I did. I knew there would be casualties otherwise if an attack on Aslarga were to happen with no adventurers present.

Like we give a damn! That thing cost us our money and our items! You think I'm pissed, check the guys behind me.

......

All that time and money we spent getting our stuff back... How you plan to make it up to us, huh?

Alright, outta the way with you! Here you go, Mr. Magan. Your usual. You! What's with the attitude around our provost?

It's nothing to do with you, Niralda. Just stay outta this.

Nothing? Oh, it's got plenty to do with me! I live in this town. And you say you don't give a damn about casualties?

No, see, what I meant was--

Are you single? How about your parents? Would you still say what you said if they lived here?

I got no family. No one cares about me but me. That's why I took up adventuring. Us guys count on no one but ourselves.

Oh, really? Well, consider me your stand-in mom. Unless you don't think I'm good enough for the job...

N-No, you're all right.

Okay. Now then, I'm your substitute mom. I know how you feel real well. Want to know why you're so pissed off?

...Sure.

It's because you're hungry. I'll get your usual whipped up in a flash, so sit tight.

I don't need it! I still ain't hungry... Sorry to make a scene. C'mon, boys, let's go.

Come back when you get hungry! Sheesh, what a lunkhead. Don't pay them no mind, Mr. Magan.

Oh, I didn't mind at all. Thank you, Niralda.
