The Mamel (Japanese: マムル, Mamul) monster family is the mascot monster family of the Shiren the Wanderer series. It debuted in Mystery Dungeon 2: Shiren the Wanderer in 1995, making it one of the Original Monster Families.

Related additional families include the Dark Mamel monster family that first appeared in Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer 4: The Eye of God and the Devil's Navel in 2010, and two cameo appearances in the Danganronpa series since 2017, under the name Monokumamel. Numerous other Mamels have appeared as well, such as the Silver Mamel Family(UT) - This is an unofficial translation. and the Borg Mamel.

The Mamel Family consists of:

  1. Mamel (Japanese: マムル, Mamuru)
  2. Pit Mamel (Japanese: あなぐらマムル, Anagura Mamuru)
  3. Cave Mamel (Japanese: 洞窟マムル, Dōkutsu Mamuru)
  4. Gitan Mamel (Japanese: ギタンマムル, Gitan Mamuru)

Biography

Characteristics

Mamels will attack the player if they are close enough to hop toward them. Gitan Mamels have more chances to hit the player due to their faster movement and attacks, as well as K.O. the player earlier thanks to their high amount of attack and defense points. While Mamels behave like any monsters in the series, on rare occasions they will appear as friendly, non-playable characters. For example, three Antipode Mamels appear in The Other Side of the World, where in this place, monsters and people live side by side peacefully.

Physical Appearance

These monsters have a smooth spherical body, and a white widening tail, belly, and cat ears. With a slightly agape mouth showing a pink or blue tongue and wide eyes, the color of the monster's back depends on its level; going from blue in its weakest to yellow in its strongest form. The Mamel is likely the first, and the weakest monster players run into on their Shiren adventures, akin to other weak, common monsters such as the Slime in the Dragon Quest series.

In Other Media

The Mamel family can be found in the following external media:

In 428: Shibuya Scramble (Japanese: 428 〜封鎖された渋谷で〜, 428: In a Blockaded Shibuya), a Mamel plush can be seen during some cutscenes of the game.[1] In CANAAN, an unlockable bonus scenario from the same game, a man can be seen wearing a Mamel hat.[2]

In Despair Dungeon: Monokuma's Test (Japanese: 絶望のダンジョン モノクマの試練, Dungeon of Despair: Monokuma's Trial), a Monokumamel appears as a common monster. It is a fusion between a Mamel and Monokuma.[3]

In Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp (Japanese: ハッピーダンガンロンパS 超高校級の南国サイコロ合宿), Monokumamels were shown during the game's reveal trailer on June 15, 2021 at E3 2021.[4][5] Like in Despair Dungeon: Monokuma's Test, they are a fusion between a Mamel and Monokuma.

The Mamel Family is mentioned in AI: The Somnium Files - nirvanA Initiative when checking a computer in Kumakura Office on February 12, during the free move investigation segment.[6]

Aiba: (I hacked into it.)
Aiba: (There is one item in the search history: "How to defeat Mamel.")
Mizuki: (Oh, they play Shiren...)
Mizuki: (Wait, how do you need help beating Mamel?)
Another piece of dialogue also references Mamels in Sejima Residence on February 15, during the 4:10 PM investigation segment.[7] In this instance, the name "Subterrean Mamul" is used, which is a reference to the Shiren 1 SFC Unofficial English Translation.
Tama: (It's a giant Subterranean Mamul!)
Ryuki: (It's a topiary! Now's not the time to be messing around!)
Tama: (S-Sorry...)

Trivia

  • Subterranean Mamul, the name used for Pit Mamel's in the unofficial English Translation of Shiren 1 on the Super Famicom was somewhat legitimized by the English release of AI: The Somnium Files - nirvanA Initiative.
    • The unofficial English translation patch pre-dates the official release on the Nintendo DS by two years.
