Plot
The Mystery Dungeon spin-offs games for the Dragon Quest series are considered as canon to the mainline series. As such, the events of Torneko's Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon happen after the events of Dragon Quest Ⅳ: Chapters of the Chosen. The events of 
World of Dragon Warrior: Torneko: The Last Hope occur half a year after the ending of this game.
Quests
Although there are no chapters present in the game, the plot is organized into eleven stages during which the overworld area is expanded. The initial stage places the player in The Castle with the goal of completing the Trial Dungeon, the tutorial dungeon of the game. Afterward, progress is tied to Shop expansions. The player can skip directly to Shop (Ninth Stage) by completing the Magic Dungeon before doing anything else that would expand the shop.
