Shiren's Kasa (Japanese: シレンの三度笠) is a recurring clothing piece in Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer series. It made its debut in Mystery Dungeon 2: Shiren the Wanderer in 1995.
Shiren's Kasa is a Japanese hat, more specifically a sandogasa[1], a type of kasa designed to protect from the sun and rain while traveling. The physical appearance of Shiren's Kasa varies through media from the series. While it's always seen with notches in it, they're never consistent in size, shape, or location. In some instances, it features a rounded, dome shape, while later on in the series, it's shown to be flat on top. In some media, it features a red marking on it, however, this is shown to have been removed and replaced with several spells later on in the series timeline.
Shiren's Kasa is said to have been given to him by a cherished friend who later died. Honoring his friend's dying wish, Shiren donned their hat and became a Wanderer.[Citation needed]
Nothing is known about the bamboo thicket where the materials to make Shiren's Kasa were originally harvested.
