Unidentified Items (Japanese: 未識別名) are items the properties of which are unknown to Shiren, and by extension, the player in Nintendo Switch/Steam Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island.

On each Adventure, unidentified items are given a generic name, and what they do isn't known until they are identified.

Dangers

If an item is unidentified, it's also unknown if it is cursed, blessed, if it has Upgrades in the case of Weapons and Shields, or how many uses it has in the case of Staves.

Identification

Identifying one item identifies all items of the same type (example, if one Pot is identified as a Preservation Pot, then all Preservation Pots are identified), however some info (curses, blessings, Upgrades, uses left) remains unknown for the other items of the same type even if their name is revealed.

To identify items, they may be used, guessed at, or properly identified through means such as an Identifier Scroll, talking with the Roamer Kante the Appraiser, putting it in an Identifier Pot, or picking it up with an Appraiser's Bracelet.

  • Identifier Scroll identifies one selected item. There is a chance that it identifies all items in the inventory that are outside Pots.
  • Kante identifies all items in the inventory in a random given item category. There is a chance that he identifies all items in the inventory

Inference

Inference is a special type of item identification found in certain dungeons. Instead of only being unidentified, each unidentified item's description has a list of 3 items it could be. If an item is properly identified, its name is greyed out if it appears as one of the three options for another item.

Dungeons that use Inference:

Naming

Unidentified items can be given a name, either by typing or by selecting the name from a checklist menu listing items registered in the Notebook.
