Shiren 1 DS:Death Reaper Family
The Death Reaper monster family (Japanese: 死の使い系, Shinotsukai Kei) consists of:
- Death Reaper (Japanese: 死の使い, Shinotsukai)
- Hell Reaper (Japanese: 地獄の死者, Jigoku no Shisha)
- Death Angel (Japanese: 死神, Shinigami)
- Death Master (Japanese: 冥王, Meiō)
Death Reapers resemble robed figures which lack legs but have a ghost-like tail forming from their cloak, while they float slightly in the air. From what can be seen of their hooded faces, they bear a devious grin and are thin, bony monsters. Characteristic of grim reapers, these monsters always wield a tall scythe in their hands.
The color of the monster's cloak, facial flesh as well as a secondary flesh color for the arms, and scythe pole depend on its level:
- 1 - olive green, grey, indigo, light brown
- 2 - sky blue, grey, grey, light brown
- 3 - red, grey, light green, light brown
- 4 - purple, violet, orange, yellow
As with many other monster families, the level 4 monster's color scheme differs from levels 1 - 3. The monster's flesh and scythe blade shading, which was grey in levels 1 - 3 is now a light purple, and its scythe pole, instead of light brown, is now yellow. Perhaps to give the impression that the level 4 form is in a completely different league of power than the previous 3.
When attacking, these monsters first pull back, then move forward slashing their target with their scythe.
Monster Ability
As Floating-Type monsters, Death Reaper Family Monsters are normally immune to Traps without having read a Super Trap Scroll. Because they are flying, they can move over water and chasms.
Level 1: Death Reapers can move at Double Speed, however, they cannot attack twice in one turn. The options for their turn are:
- 1 attacking turn - if already next to their target.
- 1 movement turn and 1 attacking turn - to pursue and attack their target.
Levels 2-4: monsters move at double speed and can attack twice per turn.
In one of Shiren's normal Speed turns, a level 2 - 4 Death Reaper Family Monster has 3 options for turn:
- 2 movement turns - to move towards their target.
- 1 movement turn and 1 attacking turn - to pursue and attack their target.
- 2 attacking turns - if already next to their target.
Levels 3 - 4: Death Angels and Death Masters can also move through solid walls.
Effect when Sealed
When inflicted with the Sealed Status, Death Reaper Family Monsters can no longer fly over water or chasms, but will still be immune to Traps, and will move and attack at normal speed. Death Angels and Death Masters can no longer move through walls.
Adventure Log Entires
Adventure Log #48 requires the player to have 'Suffocated in a wall'
Reverting from a level 3 - 4 Death Reaper Monster back to Shiren while inside a wall will cause suffocation, where 10 HP is lost each turn. Unless a Pickaxe or Weapon with such Seal is available, and if not for obtaining the log, intentionally doing this is not advised.
Combat Strategy
Death Reaper Family Monsters are quite strong, and this trait is made more troublesome because they also move at double speed. In order to achieve the first hit on this type of monster, ensure that there is 2 squares between the Death Reaper and Shiren, if not move accordingly so that there is; The monster will use both their turns to approach Shiren, giving the player the first turn in close combat.
Because of this, trying to run away from a Death Reaper can be ineffective as they can easily catch up and kill Shiren. If fighting is not viable, and the player does not have any spare healing items to throw, there are some options for minimizing the threat:
- Using a Staff of Paralysis to Paralyze them indefinitely.
- Using a Sealing Staff to reduce their attack and movement speed to normal.
- Using a Staff of Sloth to reduce them to normal speed.
Moving through walls as a Pacorepkin Family may not be a viable escape solution, as on floors with Death Reaper monsters levels 3 - 4, Monster-Shiren may be ambushed by the faster, Death Angels and Death Masters.
Alternatively, they can be transformed into a more easily defeated form by successfully throwing Monster Meat, though this can miss and cannot be thrown at monsters inside walls, therefore should not be relied on at close distances.
Monster Type
Death Reaper Family Monsters are Ghost-Type and Floating-Type, meaning that they will take 200% damage from an attack with a weapon with a File:Shiren 1 DS - Weapon Seal Ghost.png seal from a Sickle Slayer, or a File:Shiren 1 DS - Weapon Seal Air.png seal from an Air Slayer. Additionally, a weapon with both of these seals will deal 400% damage to a Death Reaper.
As a Ghost-type Monster, Death Reapers will also take damage from healing items when hit by them.
- Medicinal Herb will deal 25 damage
- Herb of Life will deal 50 damage
- Restorative Herb will deal 100 damage.
- A thrown Staff of Recovery or magic bolt from which will deal 50 damage.
Meat Strategy
All Death Reaper levels can move over water and chasms.
(Actual Death Reapers (level 1) cannot attack twice per turn, but Shiren is able to when transformed as a Death Reaper.)
- Levels 1 - 2: As a Death Reaper or a Hell Reaper, Shiren can move and attack at double speed, making them a good medium for fighting, or quickly escaping to the stairs.
- Levels 3 - 4: As well as moving and attacking at double speed, Death Angels and Death Masters can also move through walls.
Being invulnerable to most monsters while inside a wall makes for a very efficient means of escaping a floor full of powerful enemies or Thievery, as well as a way of slowly defeating entities while staying unharmed.
Caution
Reverting inside of a wall will cause suffocation, where Shiren will lose 10 HP each turn until freed.

- Death Reaper meat: Eat this to change into a Death Reaper. Able to move at double speed.
- Hell Reaper meat: Eat this to change into a Hell Reaper. Able to move at double speed.
- Death Angel meat: Eat this to change into a Death Angel. Able to move at double speed and move through walls.
- Death Master meat: Eat this to change into a Death Master. Able to move at double speed and move through walls.
- Double Speed - Your movements become faster, allowing you to move 2 times in 1 turn. The effect will continue until you return to your original form.
