Monsters
In Shiren 1, there are creatures roaming dungeons which will attack the player known as Monsters. Most monsters target and chase the player when in sight, attacking when they are next to Shiren. Monsters cannot be talked to like Characters and when defeated, will reward Shiren with a fixed amount of Experience, and may drop Items on defeat.
Monster Familiies
Monsters are grouped into families of ascending levels of similar monsters will different coloration. There are 51 monster families in the Nintendo DS port of Shiren 1. Monsters can increase or decrease in level depending on their current, becoming a stronger or weaker counterpart from their monster family.
Monster Abilities
Aside from their type, See:Monster#Monster Type, some monsters have Special Abilities and Characteristics that they can use, usually to be harmful to the player.
Special Abilities
Though some monsters do not have abilities and can only physically attack Shiren, while others have unique skills which can be used at will against the player. The abilities of monsters in the same family follow the same general trend, though may vary and can become more dangerous in higher levels.
Monster Characteristics
While abilities can be used at will, characteristics of monsters are constantly present. This includes, the Speed of the monster, it's behavior, and notable physical characteristics.
Monster Type
Some monsters have a type based on their abilities or characteristics. This type can change the the effect of certain Items when used against or in the presence of this monster, making them more effective at dealing damage or protection from the monster's abilities.
Normal-type
(ノーマル系, Nōmaru Kei) (無印)
Most monsters are Normal-type, with no exploitable qualities. Because there are so many Normal-type Monster Families, they are varied in their power and abilities.

Unique creatures that are stronger than reoccurring monsters and are positioned at key points in various dungeons.
Tainted Insect:Found on the 30th floor of Table Mountain, The Cave Behind The Waterfall, this creature had bound the Rescue the Golden Condor and laid waste to the once glorious Golden City, Amteca. The Tainted Insect will always drop an item when defeated unless under certain circumstances. |
Tainted Soldier: A mini-boss reoccurring every tenth floor up to 90 in the Tainted Path before the Tainted Queen is defeated. These wretched creatures serve the Tainted Queen, appearing to stop Shiren from reaching the last floor of the Tainted Path. Tainted Soldiers will always drop an item when defeated unless under certain circumstances. |
