Upgrades (Japanese: ???) are a gameplay element in Nintendo Switch/Steam Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island. They increase the Weapon Strength or Shield Strength given by a Weapon or Shield, and they are displayed as a plus (or minus in case of negatives) symbol followed by a number next to the name of a Weapon or Shield. Upgrades go up to a maximum of 99 for each Weapon or Shield.

Upgrading

There are various methods for upgrading a Weapon or Shield:

The Weapon or Shield that needs to be upgraded goes in first, followed by other Weapons or Shields that already have upgrades of their own

Special Weapons and Shields

Some Weapons and Shields can only be obtained by upgrading a Weapon or Shield up to 99, and then upgrading once more. This turns the item into a different item.
