Moves (Japanese: わざ) are a game mechanic in Nintendo 3DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity. They are actions a Pokémon can take during a turn, having effects such as attacking another Pokémon, healing, temporarily raising or reducing stats, or causing Status Conditions among other things. Each Pokémon can know up to four moves at once. In addition to the four moves, all Pokémon can also use the regular attack, which can be used any time an unlimited amount of times by pressing A while in a dungeon, as well as Struggle. Pokémon can learn a move by leveling up, by using TMs, Gold TMs or HMs if the Pokémon's species is able to learn that move, or by visiting Scraggy's Savvy Moves. Moves can be powered up through move upgrades and Manuals.

Move selection

The Pokémon controlled by the player can use moves by holding L and then pressing the A, B, X or Y button, each one assigned to a different move, a way of selecting moves introduced in this game. Like in previous games, moves can also be used by opening the menu with X, and then opening the Moves menu by pressing X again or by selecting the first icon in the second row of the menu. Other team members not controlled by the player will automatically use moves when possible.

Category

Moves in the Physical Category are based on the Attack and Defense stats, while those in the Special Category are based on the Special Attack and Special Defense stats. Moves in the Status Category inflict Status Conditions.

Range

The range is how far the effects of the move reach.

Target

The target indicates who is affected by the move. This can be an enemy, the Pokémon that used the move, its allies, or others.

PP

Each move has a default max PP stat, which is the number of times a move can be used. Using a move normally causes its PP to temporarily decrease by 1. Once a move reaches 0 PP, it can't be used anymore until the Pokémon regains PP by drinking a Max Elixir, occasionally by reaching a new floor with the PP Restore Team Skill enabled, by completing the current Adventure or through other methods[Data needed]. Once all four moves are out of PP, attempting to use a move will end up in using Struggle instead, a move that can be used an unlimited amount of times and that causes recoil damage to the Pokémon who uses it.

Accuracy

Moves aren't always guaranteed to succeed. Accuracy decides how likely it is for the move to succeed. Moves that never failed are marked as Sure Shot in the game.

Critical Hit

Sometimes attacking moves deal greater damage to the target. This is known as a Critical Hit.
