Pekeji |
---|
Pekeji (Japanese: ペケジ) is a character in Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer. He claims to be Shiren's little brother who was separated at birth. He is a clumsy and dimwitted man who previously worked at the Green Bamboo Shop in Bamboo Village, though after he is cheated out of money by his former girlfriend, and his dreams of owning a shop with her shattered, he joins Shiren as an ally on adventures.
Despite his stupidity, Pekeji means well and looks up to Shiren, apologizing when accidentally hits them and crying out if he kills them.
Throughout interactions with Pekeji, instead of "yes" and "no", Shiren can either punch Pekeji to knock sense into him, or stare in silence. Pekeji begins to associate the punch as Shiren's elder-brotherly tough love, and wants to depend on Shiren.
Before introducing himself, Pekeji's name is 'Shopboy' (Japanese: 店員)
Pekeji has the special ability to perform critical strikes. He will perform them approximately ??%[Data needed] of the time that attacks hit.
As the player recruit him on each adventure, Pekeji slowly advances through 8 levels. Initially, he is weak, attacks Shiren occasionally and keeps asking for Riceballs, but at his strongest level he becomes one of Shiren's strongest party members. During the Bungee Jumping quest, Pekejis level can be increased by 1 if he succeeds when jumping and is not already level 8.
At his highest level (8), Pekeji will no longer get hungry or accidentally attack Shiren.
The player can see Pekeji's level by his dialogue (See:Pekeji#Level Dialogue when Shiren meet him in dungeons. Some are repeated on consecutive adventures, but once it changes he has advanced in level.

Level altering items will not increase or decrease Pekejis level. This includes:
After letting him join Shiren on adventures, he will get hungry and ask for a Riceball. This occurs on the 110th turn of dungeon floors at level 1, and increases by 10 to the 170th turn at level 7. At his final level he will no longer get hungry. |
|
On the 40th turn after this message Pekeji will refuse to move from his spot, attack, or defend himself from Monsters. The player must throw any type of Riceball at him to get him to move again. |
|
Moving to a different floor while in this state will cause Pekeji to leave the party and the following message will appear on the next floor: |
|
Giving him a Riceball before or when he gives up will yield the same response: |
|
After feeding Pekeji, he will get hungry again with the same two messages after the same number of turns he did initially, which depends on his current level. Feeding Pekeji has no effect on his statistics, but forces Shiren to quickly clear floors while he is in the party.
Once Pekeji asks for a Riceball, quickly leave the floor to avoid wasting riceballs. His hunger will reset on the next floor.
While fighting a monster while Shiren is adjacent to him, Pekeji will occasionally strike Shiren instead of the monster.
Oh, my bad! Sorry about that! |
After this occurs, the player can talk to Pekeji to make him leave the party.
You're... you're not just going to forget about me, are you? |
When selecting yes:
I won't mess up again! Please! Don't give up on me! |
When selecting 'yes' (Punching him):
Ow... Thank you! |
When selecting 'no; (stare in silence):
Yeah, I know... I'm totally useless. I guess this is goodbye. |
When talking to him:
The next time we meet, I'll be much stronger. I'll show you. |
Pekeji will then leave the party and become a regular Character that will wander the floor. Monsters will stop attacking him. Except, he will not attack Shiren back when attacked.
If the attack defeats Shiren, Pekeji will cry out in dismay:
Oh noooooooo! |
In addition, Pekeji will occasionally punch Shiren by accident when in combat. For this reason, it is a good idea not to stand next to him while he is fighting. As he levels up, Pekeji will punch Shiren less often.
