Pots (Japanese: ) are usable items that appears in Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate. There are thirty-four variants of them in total.

Summary

This item category exists in all Shiren games, but it was often called "Jars" in earlier games. Prior game "equivalent" items are virtually identical, but they may or may not behave exactly the same in Shiren 5 as they did in prior games in the series For example, a Jar of Change in Shiren 1 could create a new jar inside it, but a Presto Pot in Shiren 5 cannot. Regardless of the name of the category, pots/jars are the only items that can contain other items in any Shiren game.

There are two sub-types of pots: insert-type pots and open-type pots. You can tell them apart because they have either "insert" or "open" as menu options for the item even if the type is not yet identified. Insert-type pots allow you to insert any non-pot items into them so long as there is still free space. There are no concepts of bulk, weight, or shape; except for a handful of special cases, any non-pot item can be inserted into any insert-type pot. Many insert-type pots either affect the inserted item in some magical way or destroy it. Inserting an item is almost always a one-way trip; even if the pot doesn't destroy the item, you usually have to break the pot by throwing it against a wall to get the contents out, or worse, you can't break the pot and the only way to get the contents out is via an Extraction Scroll. But the common Preservation Pot allows you to store and retrieve items freely without affecting them. Items cannot be inserted into open-type pots. Instead, something magical is in these pots already, and you can open them to let one of these "unknown" items out, which usually shrinks the pot. A small number of open-type pots can be refilled under certain circumstances .

Pots have a capacity range of 0-5 spaces or spots, and all newly generated pots have 2-5 spaces. A pot's capacity is always known and is a clue as to the pot's type even if it's not identified. For example, Synthesis Pots are always 5 spaces by default, and they're fairly common on early floors in most dungeons, so if you find a 5-space pot on an early floor there's a decent chance it's a Synthesis Pot. Fever Pots are always 3 spaces by default but they are much more rare, and every type of pot has a chance to have 3 spaces, so it's much harder to use capacity to help identify a Fever Pot. Aside from Synthesis and Fever, all other pot types either have a default capacity of 2-4, or a default capacity of 3-5, though the specific capacities documented for each type below may be inaccurate. A pot's capacity can be increased via a Pot God Scroll. Certain types of pots reduce their capacity as you use them. There is only one known way to reduce the capacity of an arbitrary type of pot without using it, which is by letting a Gyandora peck at your inventory. It may digest the pot, removing all capacity and destroying any contents. While this is a bit extreme and dangerous, being able to create a Fever Pot of any capacity could be very useful for crafting .

Pots cannot be cursed , but they can be blessed or sealed. A blessing doesn't positively affect the magic of the pot or any of its contents, but at least a blessed pot has a high chance to resist being sealed or turned into an Onigiri by a monster or trap. The effects of sealing a pot have not been fully tested and documented. The player cannot insert items into a sealed pot, so deliberately sealing a pot may protect it from monsters throwing items such as Dirt into it as well. It's also possible a sealed pot no longer has its normal magic effect, so sealing a 4-2-8 Pot or Unbreakable Pot might let you break the pot and safely retrieve the contents.

As a convenience, the base buy and sell prices shown below also show how much the price increases for each empty space. See the pricing section of the Items page for details.

Trivia

  • The name used for 4-2-8 Pot is a reference to 428: Shibuya Scramble, a visual novel adventure video game also developed by Spike Chunsoft.
