In Etrian Mystery Dungeon, weapons and shields can be enchanted, up to a maximum of +99 for weapons and +50 for shields. Each enchantment bonus increases the attack by 1 for a weapon and the defense by 1 for a shield.

A weapon or shield can be found with an enchantment ranging from +0 to +5 in dungeons or at the Red Lion Shoppe. Weapons can also be enchanted with Armory Scroll and shields with Guard Scroll. Finally, enchantments can be passed from one weapon to another weapon or from one shield to another shield with the Meld command which is available at Chano Retail and at Red Lion Shoppe.

The enchantment bonus can be reduced by the Rust effect, which is inflicted by 2 monsters, Medusa Tree and Gasser Tree, and by Rust Traps. The Rust effect makes it possible to have weapons and shields with a negative enchantment, up to a weapon with 1 attack or a shield with 1 defense or up to -99 depending on which happens first. The Gilding effect, obtained with Gilding Scrolls, allows you to protect your equipment from the Rust effect.
