Shields (Japanese: 盾) are a category of items in Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer 3 - The Sleeping Princess and the Karakuri Mansion. They are some of the most vital items in the game, side by side with Weapons. While it's possible to get away with fists alone, going into a dungeon without a decent shield will be a death sentence. There are plenty of other items that will help you through dungeons but you will need to craft a few different shields to beat this game.
All shields have a basic defense value (Def), a current protection bonus(+X), and a maximum possible bonus (Max). Reading a Soil Bless Scroll, or resonating with a Dragon Orbs will increase the current bonus (up to Max), while Rust Traps and some Monsters can reduce it (down to -Def). Rarely a Scrolls will add +3 Def to your weapon.
Runes
Some shields have intrinsic special abilities (Runes), from turning Experience into Gitan, halving explosion damage, hunger or preventing a shield's strength from being rusted. Every shield rune is displayed as a green orb, purple orbs are obtained from resonating with a Dragon Orbs or items being melded to a shield from a Mixer monster.
Fusion
Using a Melding Jar or a Mixer Family monster, runes can be fused into a single shield, a vital key to protecting the Player Characters from enemy attacks. Players can fuse shields using 1 of 2 methods. Melding jars are rare and have limited uses. It's possible to make an infinite-use melding Jars but that requires access to several somewhat rare scrolls. The second method is to use Mixer monsters and their leveled-up forms.
- Melding Jar:
When two or more items of the same type are inserted into a melding jar, they will be fused into one item. Jars must then have their contents extracted using an Extraction Scroll or by breaking the jar.
- Mixer Monster Family:
Mixer monsters will swallow thrown items. The base form can only swallow 2 items and will fuse them together, and each level higher can swallow one more item. The monster must then be killed to extract the shield. An alternative method and the only way to add the Perforate rune to shields is to eat the meat of a monster from the Mixer monster and walk over it.
Unfortunately, combining every rune on a single shield in this game is impossible, so players have to choose wisely. Most of the shields the Player Characters can equip throughout the story will only have 5 rune slots. There are 3 runes of vital importance. The first is Rust Ward, to prevent them from losing strength. The second is Security, which prevents Thief-type enemies from stealing items and Gitan. The third is Counter, obtained from melding a Spikedward. It will return part of the damage taken from enemies and sometimes even kill them.
