Moonlight Village Story refers to a story in Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer series. It made its debut in 1996 with  Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer GB - Monster of Moonlight Village, and has since received a variety of repropositions.

History

Moonlight Village is usually a quiet place with little interaction with other villages. However, for the past few years, a monster has taken up residence in the "Dragon's Jaw" cave on the outskirts of the village, causing the villagers to live in fear. There have been several attempts to exterminate the monster, but no one has returned alive. The village chief, fearing further damage, has been offering a village child once a year to ensure the village's safety for that year.

The day for this year's sacrifice is approaching, and the village is enveloped in a heavy atmosphere. According to the information, Fumi (an 8-year-old girl) is likely to be chosen this year, and her family is filled with sadness. However, since the village's warriors have already been defeated, there seems to be no one willing to face the monster. It is expected that the day of the sacrifice will be around summer.

During his journey, Shiren got separated from his companion, Koppa, the talking weasel. While searching for Koppa, he stumbled upon a strange scene near the small Moonlight Village. A group of people with solemn expressions were proceeding with a little girl in the center, accompanied by the sound of ringing bells. Following them was the girl's mother, crying inconsolably. Upon inquiry, Shiren learned that in Moonlight Village they had to offer a young child as a sacrifice to a monster that resided in the nearby Kuyou Pass every year.

The girl chosen as this year's sacrifice was named Fumi. The group with Fumi was on their way to the Sacrifice Pass located within Kuyou Pass to maintain the peace of the village.

Shiren decided to rest his traveler's sandals in Moonlight Village for a while. The villagers turned their faces away, saying, "It’s tradition, so there's no helping it... Give up," to Fumi's mother, who wished to somehow save her daughter.

Concerned for Fumi, and annoyed by the attitude of the adults, Nagi, Fumi’s childhood friend, ventured alone into Kuyou Pass. However, in this village, there is no one willing to go out of their way to a pass where terrifying monsters reside. With Nagi’s life in danger, Shiren, once again began preparing for his journey and challenged Kuyou Pass alone to bring back Nagi.

Having found Nagi lost in Kuyou Pass, Shiren protects him and returns to Moonlight Village. There, Shiren promises to rescue Nagi's childhood friend, Fumi, from the clutches of the monster Orochi. After having safely brought Nagi back, the villagers begin to trust Shiren more, and gradually warm up to him. They offer him travel gear to aid his adventure, and the carpenter brothers Masa and Kinji even agree to build a Warehouse for Shiren.

During this time, Shiren hears from the villagers that they saw someone resembling Koppa heading towards Kuyou Pass, prompting Shiren to embark on another adventure. Beyond Kuyou Pass, Shiren comes across a dilapidated shack surrounded by forest. The path ahead is blocked by a rock shaped like a dragon's head. As Shiren contemplates his next move, he hears a voice calling out nearby from an old well. "Hey! I'm in here! Help me out!"

Using a rope nearby, Shiren rescues Koppa from the well. Overjoyed at their reunion, the two spend the night in the shack, enjoying a brief respite. However, Shiren and Koppa stand perplexed before the rock shaped like a dragon's head, wondering how to continue their adventure. Suddenly, they notice a suspicious sign posted next to the rock.

"Dragon: When the dragon cries out... Huh? Come to think of it, the shrine in Moonlight Village... Shiren! Let's return to the village! There's something hidden there!"

Upon returning to Moonlight Village, the village elder begins to reluctantly reveal the village's secret to Shiren and the others. It's about the cursed fate of a lineage that must not be known to anyone...

Shiren learns from the village elder that the Dragon's Jaw can be opened with a scroll hidden in the shrine. However, the scroll has already disappeared... Who could have taken it? "Perhaps someone took the scroll and headed to the Dragon's Jaw ahead of you," the village elder suggests. With only these words to guide them, Shiren and the others venture once more into Kuyou Pass.

Yoshizouta reveals his identity as the monster Orochi. Shiren explores the dungeon further, defeats Orochi, and brings Fumi back to Moonlight Village.

Continuity

• Increasingly Less Motivated to Work Squad Shi-Ranger GB is a gag manga set during the events of the story.
• Orochi's defeat is one of the two events that leads Tatsumi to call Shiren for help in the Serpentcoil Island Story.
