Shields (Japanese: ) are a category of items in Shiren the Wanderer 3 - The Sleeping Princess and the Karakuri Mansion Wii They are some of the most vital items in the game, side by side with Weapons. While it's possible to get a ways with fists alone, going into a dungeon without a decent shield will be a death sentence. There are plenty of other items that will help you through dungeons but you will need to craft a few different shields to beat this game.

All shields have a basic defense value (Def), a current protection bonus(+X) as well a maximum possible bonus (Max). Reading a Soil Bless Scroll, or resonating with a Dragon Orbs will increase the current bonus (up to Max), while Rust Traps and some Monsters can reduce it (down to -Def). Rarely a Scrolls will add +3 Def to your weapon. Some shields have intrinsic special abilities (Seals), from turning experience into Gitan, halving explosion damage, hunger or preventing your shield's strength from being rusted. Using a Melding Jar or a Mixer Family monster, abilities can be melded into a single shield, a vital key to protecting yourself from enemy attacks.

Melding and Limitations

You can meld shields using 1 of 2 methods, depending on what you currently have access to. Melding jars are rare and have limited uses. You can make an infinite-use melding Jars but you'll need access to several somewhat rare scrolls. The second method is to use Mixer monsters and their leveled up forms. Further reading on how to make an Replacing Equipment After Death can be found on the Strategy Guides page.

  • Melding Jar:

When you insert one of more items of the same type into a melding jar, they will be fused into one item. Jars must then have their contents extracted using an extraction scroll or by breaking the jar.

  • Mixer Monster Family:

Mixer monsters will swallow your thrown items. The base form can only swallow 2 items and will fuse them together. The monster must then be killed to extract the weapon. An alternative method and the only way to add the [Perforate] Seals to weapons and armor is to eat the meat of a monster from the Mixer monster and walk over it.

Unfortunately, you can't combine every single meld on single shield in this game, so you have to choose wisely. Most of the shields the Player Characters can equip throughout the story will only have 5 melding slots and there's 3 you should never be without. Every shield you use should always have the [Rust Ward] meld to prevent them from losing strength. The second most valuable meld would be the [Security] meld. This will prevent enemies from stealing your items and Gitan. The final useful meld that's relatively common is [Counter], obtained from melding a Spikedward. It will return part of the damage taken from enemies and sometimes even kill them.
