This page explains Team Mechanics as a gameplay element in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon video games.

Team

In each game, the player forms a Team. Recruited or befriended Pokémon become a part of the team, which then allows the player to add them to their party when adventuring in a dungeon, if the story and the dungeon itself allow it.

Party

Party refers to Pokémon that are part of a team and are currently in use in a dungeon by the member of that team, controlled by the player. Some game allow a maximum of 3 party members, while others allow 4.

The Hero

Hero Characters are special party members, as they are the main character controlled by the player and are thus affected by different mechanics compared to other team members.

The Partner

Allies

Allies are Pokémon that follow the party, but are not in the party, meaning that the player has limited control over them. These can appear as story characters, in missions, or as part of the recruiting process in Rescue Team and Rescue Team DX. The maximum amount of allies can be different from the maximum amount of party members, although the latter affects the former, as more party members can mean less slots for allies.

Story

In some games, allies may join the player in dungeons during certain parts of the story.

Recruits

In Rescue Team and Rescue Team DX, the player needs to complete the adventure successfully in order to fully add a Pokémon to the team. Before this, recruited Pokémon are allies, not party members.

Body Size

Body Size as a mechanic that affects the party and its allies.

In Rescue Team, each Pokémon's body size is represented by a Rescue Team - Star icon.png icon. Either 1, 2, or 4. Teams can have a max of 6 stars worth of body size in the party. Additional party members will be unable to join if they would surpass the limit.
