The Mudkin (Japanese: ミドロ) Monster Family in Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate consists of:
The Night counterpart family is the Shady Mudkin Family.
The Mudkin family monsters do not attack you normally, but instead have a jumping attack that decreases the upgrade value on your equipped sword and/or shield permanently. Mudster and Mudder can also remove Runes and tags. (Do they always start by removing rustproof?) Every time they are hit, they have a chance of splitting. (Is the remaining HP copied to the new Mudkin, or does the new Mudkin start out with full HP?)
The rustproof rune protects your sword or shield from the first two forms (Mudkin and Muddy). Sources of rustproof includes Plating Scroll and synthesizing with Dull Gold Edge and Gold Shield. Some swords and shields also gain innate rustproof as they level up.
A good strategy is to unequip your both sword and shield, or whichever piece isn't rustproof, before you fight Mudkin monsters. If a Mudkin is next to you, you can unequip both your sword and shield in one turn by multi-selecting them while inserting them into a Preservation Pot. Watch out for other monsters whenever you unequip your shield, and re-equip as soon as you can. If your shield is rustproof, consider unequipping your sword while exploring a floor where Mudkin family monsters appear. This way you are protected from even a surprise attack from them.
If unequipping is not an option, you can disable these monsters with status ailments using staves and talismans. Sealing and sleep work well, whereas paralysis only works if they aren't blocking your way. Note that talismans like all thrown items can miss, and aren't as reliable as staves at close range. Firing arrows at them can be risky, as they often don't do enough damage and will cause the Mudkin to split.
