Shields (Japanese: ) are the only reliable way to defend against attacks in Super Famicom Mystery Dungeon 2: Shiren the Wanderer, as without one, Shiren's HP will rapidly diminish against ever-strengthening Monsters.

All shields have an unalterable base power value: Base Strength, and receive additional power through upgrades, in which all shields have a set Max Upgrade value which cannot be exceeded. The Upgrade Value number is shown next to the shield name as +[Value].

A shields Upgrade Value can only be increased by +1 by reading a Earth Scroll with the shield equipped.

Combining shields in a Fusion Pot will add the upgrade values of multiple shields together into the first inserted, as long as the Max Upgrade value has not been exceeded.

Shield Seals

See: Melding and Seals

Some types of shields have inherent abilities (Seals), with various effects, including:

  • The ability to return a part of physical damage taken.
  • Increasing the chance of evading physical attacks.
  • Protecting Items and Gitan from being stolen.
  • Halving the damage of dragon fire.
  • Reducing the rate of current Fullness depletion.

A Fusion Pot can combine many of these Seals into one item, creating an insanely dependable shield.

Curses

See: Curses

Shield Seals do not function while the item is cursed but the upgrade value will be preserved and still function for defense. Once equipped, the Shield also cannot be normally removed.
