Gaibara Foreshadowing the Melding Jar.

Jars (Japanese: ), also known as Pots, are a type of Item in the Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer series. They made their debut in Super Famicom Mystery Dungeon 2: Shiren the Wanderer in 1995. Gaibara is an eccentric artisan known for his Jars. He runs a pottery dojo in {Mountaintop Town called Gaibara Kilns, with an appended gallery called Gaibara Kilns Gallery alongside it.

During gameplay, Jars are organized into 4 primary categories, with a little bit of overlap: Insert, Press, Capture, and Throw

Insert Jars are intended for the player characters to insert items into them, though most jars don't allow the items to be extracted freely, requiring the Jar to be broken, or an Extraction Scroll to be used.

Press Jars are intended to be pressed to utilize their effects. Some, such as the Chiropractic Jar, will restore the user's HP, and others, such as the {{Shiren|Monster Jar} will release monsters.

Throwing Jars are intended to be thrown, due to their dangerous nature. They almost always have overlap with the first two categories. A Bottomless Jar will create Pitfall Traps in the area around where it breaks, when thrown, and a venting Jar will cause an explosion in the surrounding area when it breaks. Items placed into a Bottomless Jar will be lost, which putsit in both categories simultaneously. Additionally, jars such as the Melding Jar are often required to be thrown and broken to retrieve the items Fused within them.

Capture Jars are used to capture things. This can range from pressing a Walrus Jar to steal an item from a Shop, or retireve one from an Item Island, capture Water from a Waterway, or throw a Hiding Jar at a monster to capture them inside of it. As with Throwing Jars, Capture Jars often fall into the first two categories. For example, a Walrus Jar is pressed to release the Thiefwalrus inside, and throwing it or a Monster Jar will release the monsters held within when it breaks.
