Gates:Unused Pokémon data

Unused Pokémon data can be found in the files of  Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, with most of it being in pokemon/pokemon_data_info.bin.

Pokémon with unused data

The file pokemon/pokemon_data_info.bin contains unused Pokémon data for Starmie (ID 0x03), Chinchou (ID 0x08), Sunkern (ID 0x0C), Lugia (ID 0x14), Ho-Oh (ID 0x15), Shiny Ho-Oh (ID 0xC4), Kecleon (ID 0x19), Victini (ID 0x26), Reshiram (ID 0x95), Zekrom (ID 0x96), Kyurem (IDs 0x98, 0x9C and 0x9D) and the Substitute (ID 0xBE).

Of these, Starmie and Chinchou are completely unused outside of Starmie's model appearing in Pokémon Paradise in front of the Sunken Treasure minigame facility, and Chinchou models being used as obstacles in said minigame. Sunkern was also intended to be a clerk for a minigame facility, Lone Diver, which is entirely inaccessible in the released game, with Sunkern itself also ending up completely unused.

Chinchou, Starmie and Sunkern

The only move Chinchou and Sunkern can learn is the regular attack at level 1, which is normally not learned, as all Pokémon can use it. This makes the game crash when selecting the two Pokémon at Scraggy's Savvy Moves. Chinchou and Sunkern also have unused portraits.

Lugia, Ho-Oh, Shiny Ho-Oh, Reshiram, Kyurem and Zekrom can be fought, however they can't use any TMs and their movesets are nearly non-existent, because the moves chosen in pokemon/fixed_pokemon.bin (which contains data for bosses and allies) don't necessarily need to align with the ones that they can actually learn. Because Gigantic Pokémon are unrecruitable and thus not expected to be used by the player, they can't walk in corridors or smaller rooms unless a Mobile Scarf is held or a Mobile Orb is used. This trick doesn't work with all Pokémon, however.

Despite Victini only appearing as a shop owner and only being able to fight Kecleon as an unrecruitable enemy, both actually have full learnsets and can use TMs. They work perfectly, but can't be obtained by playing the game normally. Starmie also has a complete learnset, but doesn't have an ability, and its previous stage, Staryu, is not in the game at all.

Extra entries

The file also contains several more entries, going up to 250 (0xFA). Entries ranging from 0x9F to 0xBC, from 0xCD to 0xBD and from 0xE9 to 0xF6 are all named "Extra X", with X being a decimal number. All of them use a placeholder model that has no animations and looks like a small black Pikachu with the word "dummy" in red repeated four times on its body. All "Extra" entries share the same placeholder data, which is also used for some of the other unplayable entries: Normal type with the Keen Eye ability and only learning Tackle at level 1.

Bittercold entries

The Bittercold has 4 entries (IDs 0xBD, 0xCA, 0xCB, 0xCC), using different models, with 0xCA and 0xCC exclusively being used in cutscenes. Due to it being Gigantic as well as a boss, what was said about both boss-only species and Gigantic Pokémon also applies here. The Bittercold only learns Tackle at level 1 and can't learn any TMs. Making the Bittercold appear above the ground will cause the lower half to go below the floor, because it was never meant to appear in such an area. When 0xBD takes damage, it plays an unused animation of its core getting damaged. The Winds of Despair surround the first three forms of the Bittercold only when inside a dungeon.
