Torneko (Japanese: トルネコ) is the protagonist of the Torneko's Great Adventure series. He made his debut appearance in Torneko's Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon
in 1993.
Biography
Physical Appearance
Torneko wears a loose muumuu, chosen for comfort and practicality over fashion-ability. He hefts a giant backpack of sorts at all times, which he uses to hold his wares, personal belongings and, presumably, some of the party's items. He has a mustache and huge belly, both of which help to bring out his general jolliness. He has blue hair and a blue mustache.[1]
Personality
His personality in his own game series is similar to any silent protagonist. However, by interacting with other non-playable characters and even his own family, he is known to have the typical mindset of a family man and a merchant, although he is not greedy.
Name
Torneko and Taloon are not actual names used in the real world, being nomenclature invented by the original development staff and Enix America Corporation. For the characters cameo appearance in Dragon Quest VIII, the localization team headed by Richard Honeywood opted to make Taloon his surname instead of abandoning it outright.[1]
History
Early life
Introduced in the third chapter of Dragon Quest Ⅳ, Torneko is known as a merchant who would later join Solo or Sofia, the game's protagonists, as one of "the Chosen Ones". It would be in his own spin-off games that we discover what happened to him and his family after the event of the aforementioned game.
Torneko knew how to bargain since he was a kid, with his first successful attempt on trading a Dragon Scale for a stick to a bully named Lalo. He would later find interest in being a merchant and started working as one in Surene, later renamed to Zalenagrad, and one of many locations in Dragon Quest Ⅳ. Later on, he would meet for the first time Nina, albeit frustrated and even her strangling him after he told her the weapon her ex-husband had could not be returned in this store. This first encounter evolved into a relationship, resulting in both of them getting married and have a kid named Paulo, before the events of Dragon Quest Ⅳ.[2]

After saving the world with The Chosen Ones, he returned to his town and continued his work as an arms merchant. One day, he decided to expand his merchandises to unknown territories and went with his family on opening one there. Arriving at the location, they would build a house, return a lost treasure for the King nearby them, and start their job there. Unbeknownst to Torneko, their house was near a mystery dungeon.
