Melding is the key to creating powerful equipment in Shiren 3. The most you can get from the Blacksmith or an Air Bless Scroll or Earth Bless Scroll is +1 and on rare occasions, +3. Although it may seem obvious to some, many people miss the fact that melding is one of the easiest ways to quickly boost up your Katana, Mastersword, Wind Shield (or what have you) to their maximum bonus. Dragon Orbs aren't unlocked until roughly one-third of the way through the story and if you lose all your items, it can be hard to survive in a dungeon with Dragon Orbs to raise a piece of equipment up. You can use a Blank Scroll as an Air or Earth Bless Scroll to upgrade your equipment, but it's far easier to use random loot found in dungeons.

Melds & Seals

Commonly referred to by fans as melds and in Shiren 3 and 5, officially referred to as seals are valuable upgrades that can be melded to weapons and shields. Most weapons and shields and all armbands have seals and the only way to combine them onto a single item is through melding. Starting in Shiren 2, items now have limited slots for seals which means you can no longer combine every possible seal to a single item. While Shiren 2 allowed you to throw a Blank Scroll at a Mixer to add a slot to your items, this feature was removed from Shiren 3 due to the ease of use and the only way to add slots to an item is through the Blacksmith. Each item has a set number of slots that can be upgraded (to a limit). Some seals are obtained by combining items with weapons, shields, and armbands or by using Dragon Orbs in dungeons.

Melding Methods

In Shiren 3, there are two methods to meld items together.

Melding Jar

Inserting two or more items of the same type into a Melding Jar will combine them into a single item, melding their bonuses, charges, and/or effects. This can be done with weapons, shields, armbands, and staves. In Dungeon Shops, placing an item in a melding jar that you haven't paid for will not combine with a similar item in the jar, but the jar will still lose a slot. (This works the same for a Jar of Change.) Inserting items that are not weapons, shields, armbands, or staves into a Melding Jar will use a slot, but produce no other effect. You can retrieve such items normally. You can use one Jar simultaneously with different types of items. The first weapon or shield inserted will be the "base" item. All subsequent items of the same type Inserted into the Jar will add their bonuses (+1, +3, etc) and any and all effects (e.g. rust-proof, sped up hunger or slow hunger, etc.) to the base item. Weapon and Shield effects are not interchangeable. Bonuses from shields cannot be Melded onto weapons, and vice-versa. Melding with items that either already have the given effects or that are at their maximum bonus value will waste the "extra" effects or bonuses.

Mixer Monster Family

Mixer monsters and their leveled forms allow you to combine 2 - 5 items depending on the level of the monster. They work entirely the same as melding jars, up to a point. By throwing certain items at a mixer monster or eating mixer monster meat and stepping over items, you can add special seals to your equipment.

Seal Kanji Colors

  • Seals with blue kana are unique; only one of these can appear on an item.
  • Seals with black kana are fixed; more than one of these can be melded to an item, but will not enhance the ability.
  • Seals with white kana are stackable; by melding more than one of these to an item, the ability will be multiplied.
  • Seals with yellow kana have a chance of destroying the item they're melded to when activated. The Sturdy seal (∞) prevents the item from being destroyed by this effect.

Weapon Seals

Every weapon seal icon is red, purple icons are from Dragon Orbs or items being melded to a sword from a Mixer monster.

Dragon Black When HP is full, the weapon will shoot fire. Flame Sword
Dragon Slayer White Highly effective against dragons. Dragon Sword
Drainer Slayer White Highly effective against monsters that use drain. Drain Buster
Excavator Yellow Walls are destructible, but the weapon may break. Pickaxe
Feeble White May reduce the attack of foes. Blade Cleaver

Floater Slayer White Highly effective against floating monsters. Air Slayer

Grand Paralyze White May inflict Grand Paralyze on foes. Paralysis Pike
Hinder White May lower a foe's Speed. Naginata
Homing Black Direct attacks are 100% accurate. Homing Blade
Immobilize White May Immobilize foes. Shadowbind Blade
Impale Blue Attacks will pierce through foes a distance of one square away. Aura Spear
Leech White Restores a small amount of HP with each successful attack. Life Sword
Parry White May deflect damage to a nearby foe. Jitte

Rust Ward Black Prevents a weapon from having its strength lowered. Gold Sword

Splash Blue Successful attacks will splash damage onto all nearby foes. Charged Rod
Sturdy Black Prevents other seals from breaking the weapon. Adamant Pickaxe, Iron Hammer
Thrust Blue Attacks can reach a maximum of three squares. Senkakon
Tornado Blue Attacks hit all 8 surrounding squares but adds a permanent Slow effect. Tornado Sickle
Trident Blue Attacks will strike forward across both frontal diagonals. Razor Wind
