The MDFW is a place of learning for fans of all stripes who wish to know more about the Mystery Dungeon franchise. We have a plethora of exclusive and hard-to-find Mystery Dungeon information.
Origins of the Wiki
The Mystery Dungeon Franchise Wiki originated as the "Shiren the Wanderer Wiki" on Gamepedia, a fork of the original Shiren the Wanderer Wikifoundry Wiki (Neé Wetpaint Wiki), founded by karmarogue on Wetpaint.com on March 11, 2008. On September 11, 2019 Korra Baskerville upgraded it into the Gamepedia "Mystery Dungeon Wiki", an amalgamation of many previous Mystery Dungeon projects that focused on all the Mystery Dungeon games. On November 7, 2020 Adkuate, Blue, and Korra II took the wiki independent as the MDFW, and the focus shifted to covering all Mystery Dungeon content, no longer being hindered by Gamepedia's game only limitations.

Currently, the strongest sections of the MDFW cover Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer, , Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, game soundtracks and Pokémon anime episodes.
The original wiki only covered the Nintendo DS release of Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer in the west. From there, it eventually grew to cover the bulk of the Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer (series) titles. In 2013, Wikifoundry acquired wetpaint. The wiki was shut down in 2016 by Wikifoundry due to anonymous users spamming the site. Shiren1111 adopted the wiki, demoted the old admins and began cleaning up and reformatting the project for the first time in years. In mid-2018, Wikifoundry was experiencing numerous issues, such as only letting moderators and admins edit and eventually, preventing anybody from logging in. After more than a decade on Wetpaint/Wikifoundry, the Wiki was ported to Gamepedia by rhaining and Shiren1111, where cleanup and expansion continued.

Due to the large scope of the project and the limited editor base, many sections are lacking. If you know anything that isn't on the wiki, feel free to contribute! If you are interested, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the Manual of Style, but we are willng to correct mistakes and answer your questions on Discord or the wiki itself.
The wiki was expanded as a Shiren the Wanderer wiki on Gamepedia and began to cover all Shiren titles for the first time ever. A little over a year later, the Wiki was upgraded to a Franchise Wiki by Korra II Baskerville. Several other Mystery Dungeon Wikis and projects are merged and absorbed into the project. After a year 1 as a franchise Wiki, Fandom announced they would be retiring the Gamepedia domain and importing Gamepedia Wikis to the Fandom domain. The wiki team began to prepare for separation from Fandom/Gamepedia and the new, independent Wiki was founded on November 7, 2020 by Adkuate, Blue, and Korra II.

The Mystery Dungeon Franchise Wiki, or MDFW for short, is the wiki for everything Mystery Dungeon. The project's goal is the documentation of everything Mystery Dungeon. The MDFW is a place of learning for fans of all stripes who wish to know more about the Mystery Dungeon franchise. We have a plethora of exclusive and hard-to-find Mystery Dungeon information. From games, anime shorts, manga, game music, soundtracks, guide books, novellas, unused content, lost media, demos, news archives, events, commercials, trivia, fan translations, glitches and more.

The original wiki only covered the Nintendo DS release of Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer in the west. From there, it eventually grew to cover the bulk of the Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer titles.

Contributing

The Mystery Dungeon Franchise Wiki covers everything Mystery Dungeon related, as such, it is split into different namespaces based on type of media, intended to make navigation and finding relevant information easier. While the wiki articles are written in English, various elements such as item, monster, character names and more are listed in Japanese. This is both to aid players of the videogames, as well as for documentation purposes. Contributions are always welcome! We do ask that you follow our Manual of Style. If you're unsure how to format something, consider looking for a similar page on the wiki to see how it's formatted. When in doubt, don't be afraid to ask for help if you are unfamiliar with the formatting or wiki editing as we were all new at this at some point. Or maybe you just want to read what we already have, in which case, enjoy!

What to contribute?

That depends entirely on you. What are your skills? What are your interests?

  • Are you a writer?
    • Great! We need more people like you. Consider writing strategy guides or walkthroughs. You could write character bios and about sections.
  • Are you a dataminer?
    • Sprites, models, cutscenes, cut content, etc. There's an endless list of things you could contribute.
  • Are you a collector?
    • Consider scanning manuals, guidebooks, promotional displays. You could document plushies or merchandise.
  • Is music your passion?
    • The soundtrack pages can always use a helping hand.
  • Do you only have the games?
    • Try testing out items in unique situations and document your findings on their respective pages. You could so the same with traps, terrain, monsters, etc. There's plenty to do if you're creative.
  • Is translation your skill?
    • If yes, we'd love to have you. You could translate the wiki into another language. You could translate foreign wiki articles into English, etc. It's up to you.

As you can see, there are a number of things you can do based on your skills and skill level. Even if you think you don't have enough time to edit the wiki; nobody is required to donate any more time to this project than they desire. You can contribute as much or as little as you like.

Project Organization

Games are given their own namespaces while other forms of media such as anime shorts, manga/comics, and merchandise share namespaces. The various namespaces act as mini wikis for each subject, with consistent formatting across the board. This is intended to make navigation and finding relevant information easier. Each series also has a lore namespace, listing all game-specific pages across the site while also providing general information that applies to all forms of media.

Multilingual Support

Due to the fact that most Mystery Dungeon media never receives official fan translations, this wiki supports fan translation projects as well as lists of important elements such as item and monster names in Japanese to aid players. The wiki also contains various Rosetta Stone pages for various topics including items, locations, monsters, soundtracks, and more. This is intended to allow players to quickly reference names across languages while playing in a language they may be unfamiliar with. Fan-translated names are included in Rosetta Stone pages for players who choose to play fan translations of games that may use different names for items, monsters, locations, etc.

The symbol Template:FT indicates a fan translation. The symbol (NT) - This name may be officially used elsewhere, but this media hasn't been officially translated. indicates that while the media in question hasn't been officially translated, the translation is officially used elsewhere.

Due to Mystery Dungeon media being primarily or only released in Japan, the Japanese side of the community is much larger and has made multiple wikis for many of the games. These resources prove to be invaluable assets to this wiki. Information from these wikis is occasionally copied and used for this wiki. The primary source of information we obtain from Japanese communities are monster and item spawn locations as well as lists of Japanese names of various gameplay elements such as the Adventure Log.Info symbol.png The vast majority of content on this site is original and no attempt has been made to synchronize content across languages.
