A Shield is the only reliable way to defend against attacks in Shiren the Wanderer DS, as without one, Template:ShirenPC Hit Points will rapidly diminish against ever-strengthening Monsters.
All shields have an unalterable base power value: Base Strength, and receive additional power through upgrades, in which all shields have a set Max Upgrade value which cannot be exceeded. The Upgrade Value number is shown next to the shield name as +[Value].
A shields Upgrade Value can only be increased by +1 by reading a Earth Bless Scroll with the shield equipped.
Combining shields in a Melding Jar will add the Upgrade Values of multiple shields together into the first inserted, as long as the Max Upgrade value has not been exceeded.
Some types of shields have inbuilt abilities (Seals), with various effects, including:
Melding Jars can combine many of these Seals into one item, creating an insanely dependable shield.
Shield Seals do not function while the item is cursed but the upgrade value will be preserved and still function for defense. Once equipped, the Shield also cannot be normally removed.
Triggering Rusty Traps and Green Slime Family Monsters File:Green Slime.png can decrease the Upgrade Value of shields and monsters level 3 and 4 can remove Seals.
A shields minimum upgrade value is the same number as its Base Strength, but negative. Eg. a Blast Shield has a Base Strength of 3, but will continue to decrease until it stops at a minimum upgrade value of -3.
The [Gld]File:Shiren 1 DS Shield Seal Gold.png Seal will be removed first, then the other seals in a random order. When being attacked, your shield or weapon will either rust by an amount or have another seal removed from it, if available.
Green Slimes: Decrease upgrade value by 1 each rust.
Purple Slimes: Decrease upgrade value by 2 each rust.
Grey Slimes: Decrease upgrade value by 1 each rust and can remove seals.
Red Slimes: Decrease upgrade value by 3 each rust and can remove seals.
Shields cannot lose their intrinsic ability, eg. a Hide Shield cannot have its [H] Seal removed. The [H] seal on a Bronzeward can be lost however, because it is not intrinsic, but melded in.
When checking the 'info' of a shield with multiple seals, they will be listed in the above order. The Hide Shield [H] Seal and the Armor Ward Heavy [Hvy] Seals are mutually exclusive.
Gold-plated | Dragon | Fragile | Hunger | Spiked | Heavy | Evasive | Blast | Thief | Prism | Gaze | Kigny |

The following list are all the shields you can find, listed in alphabetical order.
These shields are not found normally, and are obtained as rewards for successful rescues in specific locations. They are the same in appearance to their regular counterparts but have a much higher Max Upgrade potential. They are exclusive to the NDS port. For other rescue reward item locations see: Rescue Reward Items.
