A Portrait (Japanese: ???) is a small image that accompanies dialogue or menus in the Shiren the Wanderer series. In most instances, it depicts the face a character expressing an emotion, although there have been occasional portraits that depict other things, such as objects.
Style
Portraits have used various styles across the series an have even made appearances outside of the main-series games. The other material uses the portraits taken from the games themselves.
They were not introduced in the Shiren series until Shiren 4 DS, as Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team introduced the concept of portraits in the Mystery Dungeon franchise in 2005.
Shiren 4
In their initial appearance, Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer 4 - The Eye of God and the Devil's Navel, they were made using 2D pixel art, and only for characters that had either story related dialogue or as NPCs in towns.
Shiren 5
Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer 5 - The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate followed the same style as Shiren 4. The same portraits are used in the same way in later re-releases of the game, with a higher quality rendition of them.
Shiren 6
/
Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island took a vastly different approach to portraits, as they aren't normal images, but instead simply display the 3D model of the character, showing its body in its entirety, with the same look as the overworld or dungeon models.
