Debug Mode is an unused mode in Mystery Dungeon 2: Shiren the Wanderer originally used by developers to test things in-game. While in debug mode, if the player heads south of Canyon Hamlet, the Debug Room can be accessed.
Accessing
Changing from FF to 00 the bytes at 8000 and 8001 in a headerless ROM, or 8200 and 8201 in a headered ROM, enables debug mode. It can also be enabled with the Pro Action Replay codes C0800000, C0800100.
Controls
Controller 1
Controls | Action |
---|---|
Start | Skip to the next floor and increase Shiren's level by 1. |
B+Start | Reveal location of all monsters on the current floor. |
Y+Start | Reveal location of all items on the current floor. |
B+Y+Start | Kill all monsters on the current floor. |
R+Start | Display full map of the current floor. |
B+R+Start | Opens a menu allowing the selection of any item in the game.
Works with the unofficial translation, however most of the text is unreadable. |
Y+R+Start | Turns off the background music. The only way to turn it back on is to reset. |
B+Y+R+Start | Opens a sound test menu. |
Controller 2
Controls | Action |
---|---|
Start | Allows for the entire current floor to be viewed using the D-Pad on controller 2.
The coordinates of the portion currently on-screen are displayed, |
Makes the screen black as long as it's held. | |
X | Displays Shiren's coordinates. |
Y | Opens a sprite and animations test menu including monsters, characters, and items |
In the animations test menu | |
A | Play the animation. |
B | Close the menu. |
Up/down | Move up and down the cursor of the primary menu (monster select). |
Left/right | Move up and down the cursor of the secondary menu (direction the monster is facing). |
X/Y | |
Start | Changes whether it plays the normal animation or an alternate one. |
Items Selection Menu
Pressing B + R + Start on controller 1 opens a menu to add any item to the inventory. The tables in this section follow the same layout as the game, which can be helpful with identifying the Japanese names, or when using the Shiren 1 SFC English Unofficial Translation, where the text of these menus isn't displayed properly.
Items | |
---|---|
Herbs | Weapons |
Scrolls | Shields |
Staves | Armbands |
Jars | Arrows |
Food | Others |
The Weapons sub-menu allows selecting the upgrade/downgrade value after the item is selected. The +/- toggle makes the item cursed if set to minus. | |||||||||||||||
The Shields sub-menu allows selecting the upgrade/downgrade value after the item is selected. The +/- toggle makes the item cursed if set to minus. | |||||||||||||||
The Staves sub-menu allows selecting the amount of uses after the item is selected. The +/- toggle reverses the amount and makes the item cursed if set to minus. |
|||||||||||||||
The Jars sub-menu allows selecting the amount of uses after the item is selected. The +/- toggle reverses the amount and makes the item cursed if set to minus, using it causes a glitched effect and makes the game unplayable. |
The Arrows sub-menu allows selecting the amount after the item is selected. The +/- toggle makes the item cursed if set to minus. | ||||||||||||||
|
All the options in this menu lead to a sub-menu to select monster meat and monster level, however only the first option is for monster meat. The others give goal items that end the Adventure and glitch items. |
