The Cave of the Wall ScrollTemplate:FT (Japanese: 掛軸裏の洞窟) is a bonus dungeon in Shiren 1 emphasizing offensive use of traps against monsters. It is sometimes called Gaibara's Dungeon or the trap dungeon. The entrance to this dungeon is in Mountaintop Town, inside Gaibara's pottery dojo. You must complete Gaibara's Pottery, and beat Table Mountain, then visit Gaibara again to unlock access to this dungeon.
Unique Features
You cannot take items or Gitan into the dungeon (any that you have on you when you enter are discarded). But you can take allies into the dungeon and you get to keep anything you have on hand should you win or escape.
You start the dungeon with a Trapper Bracer, which lets you pick up traps and use them against enemies. This radically changes how you play this dungeon as compared to normal "baseline" play.
While wearing a Trap Armband, the rules to the game change. Monsters are harmed by stepping on traps, and you are not. You can also pick them up as items, and drop them to set them where you want. Dropped traps cannot be picked up again, and have a chance of vanishing every time they are set off. All monsters get a "multiplier" when you wear the Trap Armband, and a monster killed with a multiplier at zero is only worth one experience point, regardless of difficulty. When a monster steps on a trap, the multiplier goes up by one. From there, stepping on another trap will boost the multiplier by another point, but stepping on a non-trap space lowers it by one. When a monster dies, the experience earned is the normal value times the multiplier.
The goal is to find Gaibara. He appears randomly starting from floor 15. This dungeon doesn't have a boss monster. If you succeed, the reward item is a Stress-Relieving Pot. You need to complete Shrine of the Food God, (Meet Naoki on floor 25) and Cave of the Wall Scroll (Meet Gaibara on floor 15) to unlock the Fei's Final Problem.
Strategies
Shiren's level will reset to 1 by entering.
While collecting traps on the early floors, keep an eye out for a Riceball Trap. When you've found one, level up a Rice Baby with it and proceed to let the Rice Changer breathe on 5 or 6 of your items. At this point, experience is not a concern, so only collect traps that will help you survive the last floors, such as traps that seal or instantly kill monsters. If you find a weapon that's not a Pickaxe and a decent shield along the way, you shouldn't have much trouble beating this dungeon.
If you find the experience of being in the Cave of the Wall Scroll dull, try to leave with multiple Trap Armbands.
