Backtracking is a gameplay element introduced in Shiren 1 DS Up to the 14th floor of Table Mountain the exit to the next floor in dungeons have options of 'Go' or 'Back'.
The player can travel up until Cryptic Rock Valley, passing File:Shiren 1 DS NPC sprite - ManE1.pngWarehouses, File:Shiren 1 DS Shopkeeper sprite large.pngShops and File:Shiren 1 DS NPC Sprite - Man A 1.pngSmiths along the way. Now selecting 'back' and returning to previous areas, the player can travel all the way back to Canyon Hamlet, passing the shops once again.
Usage
- Collecting Items and accumulating
Gitan. - Recycling Shops for different items.
- Slowly upgrading
Weapons with Blacksmiths. - Sorting items between Warehouses.
- Upgrading items in
Strengthening Jars. Only going forwards to completely new floors* will upgrade the items contained.
Stream Village Shop
Many useful items are sold at the shop in Underground Stream Village, but normally, it can only be accessed once before moving on. With Pitfall Trap, the shop can be visited numerous times.
See: Stream Village Shopping Spree
With Mecharoid Family
- A Strengthening Jar will function on floors after Stream Village that have been repeatedly passed using this Pitfall Trap method.
Limitations
When backtracking to Canyon Hamlet, Template:ShirenPC will return to Level 1, with 8 maximum Strength and 100 maximum Fullness, and any party members will leave. Items and collected Gitan will still be kept.
- Items on the floors of dungeons will only appear the first time that floor is entered for that adventure. Passing floors with Wagons also counts as traversing the floor, and there will be no items. Move back to Canyon Hamlet to start a new adventure and reset all items.
- Bungee Jumping can only be done once each adventure but not after the player had moved to 10 F. As long as Janus Valley has not been passed, the player can backtrack as many times to 9F and Butafooter will still be there. They will not be there when backtracking from 10 F and passing a second time, or when taking a wagon directly to Janus Valley.
- Blacksmiths and The Cliffs Restaurant can only be used once for each adventure. Move back to Canyon Hamlet to use them again.
Trivia
In other Shiren titles, this backtracking feature is replaced by adding banks, shops, storage and other facilities at the spawning town.
