Shiren 4

About the "suck floor" dungeon... That dungeon sucks (literally :P). I didn't any serious attempt to beat it, but I found 2 important tips (that you may already know):

- In shops, the "floor suck" rule don't work. If you kill a monster in a shop, and drop an item, it will be there (use the Mazerun family -melding monster- inside shops).

- If there are no shops, you can still use the Mazerun monster. Just don't kill it. Instead, wait until night/day comes. The monster will disappear and the item will be on the floor waiting for you to pick it up.

Old wiki thread

Gabikun

There are puzzles like the 1st shiren DS ones in that first village, but I've done all of them and hadn't any trouble. They are a good start point for beginners, and there are some puzzles that must be done to know some new aspects of the game.

Shiren restores his HP faster at low levels, but when you have more HP, it returns as fast as before.

You find people when you are in the dungeons, some of them will ask you for something and give you something in return. Once I found a guy that asked for a weapon. I gave to him a Cyclops Killer, and he told me to search for him in the next adventure. He gave me the same weapon with +5 in the next run. The wandering blacksmith is again there, asking to raise a weapon for 1000 gitan. And there is a little child that asks for a lighter at night, but I hadn't any remaining by then.

New scrolls: there is one that lets you change day/night time as you wish (useful when you are trapped by night monsters and you have not any skills left). There is also one that erases the monster aura if that monster is in front of you.

About the sparkling floors: sometimes there are sparkling tiles in the floor. Those sparkling tiles have always items buried in them, but you need to eat a specific herb to be able to take those buried items

Lord Gek

One cool tweak I noticed in the main dungeon is with the Blank Scrolls. These were ALWAYS a huge pain or me in the imports as I have no idea how any of these scroll names were spelled. Well now when you decide to write on a blank scroll it instantly pops up with a list of all scrolls you've discovered so far, you just need to choose one!

I'm loving so far the even in this first dungeon it feels like I have access to at least ALMOST all of the items! God how tedious I'm finding the story dungeons in Shiren Wii with their tight little item lists (you can find any one of these 4 items in this dungeon)!

Gabikun

I think you were playing the wii version a lot of time (because you got used to that limited ammount of items), but I have to say something here: the first runs I had, I only found weak weapons and some special weapons, until I reached the 17th floor (there is a history scene there the first time). From then, I'm finding strong weapons (12 attack and more!!)

New people I found: a wandering shopkeeper!! Yes, he is wandering in the dungeons and he has some items to sell. Unfortunately, as it's menu based, you can't steal them as normal shops.

And now, the feature to save the weapon/shield if you die. In the second town, you can speak to a guy in the southern house and sign a weapon or shield (or both, if you have much money) paying 3.000 gitan for each item. When you die, in future runs, you can come back to see if they have delivered back to him, and he will return back as it was when you died (even if you meld it after signing and it leveled up to a stronger form!). Not only that, when you die with a signed weapon/shield, there is a guy wandering in the next runs that will deliver those items to you if you have space for them.

LordGek 8. RE: Shiren 4 official thread

Feb 25 2010, 3:31 PM EST In my first run up to the second town I met both the mobile blacksmith and some other guy that wanted me to pick some item from my pack for something. I'm assuming it is the big enchanter guy and gave him one of my weapons. Could he have been asking me for something else? I'm pretty sure he took the weapon so I hope I guessed right.

Shiren 5

Reviveable party member

In the character section of the official page, you can see a new party member.

He doesn't seem to have ranged or special attacks, but his special feature is that, when he's defeated, you can see a tomb in the place he died (and the monster who killed it leveled up).

If you have healing herbs (any can work) you can resurrect him by throwing that herb to the placed tomb.

Shiren 4 party members

If the party members follow the patterns of shiren 4, they can gain levels by defeating monsters (in shiren 4 they had 10 levels), so maybe he can be useful....

Shiren 5 save slots

I found some interesting things about the new shiren 5:

- First of all, IT WILL HAVE 2 SAVE SLOTS. It seems there were too many complains about only one save data in Shiren DS, DS 2 and 4, so Shiren 5 will have 2 save data slots. A great choice!! You can start again your adventure without erasing previous saves.

Shiren 4-5 connectivity

- About the Shiren 4 and 5 connectivity, it will be limited. In the page, they say they will keep the rescues in Shiren 5 (only with another Shiren 5 cartridge), but you can connect Shiren 4 and Shiren 5 games to send HERBS OF REVIVAL and "REDO" HERBS (the enhanced herb of revival, that will grant the choice to revive or to escape the dungeon when you die) from Shiren 4 to Shiren 5.

PS. In Shiren 5, soaked scrolls revert to the original scroll after a few floors instead of transforming into a blank scroll.

The new features, comparing with the DS version:

- Revamped graphics. They are much better than the DS version. Sprites, not 3D.

- Blessed items, with enhanced abilities (the DS version only had cursed items). (This is conflicted elsewhere)

- Cursed items are split into "cursed" and "sealed". Cursed items are only the equippable items, they can't be unequipped and retain their abilities (good or bad). Sealed items can be equippable or consumable items, equippable items lose their abilities, but can be removed. Sealed consumable items can't be used.

- Day and Night cycle. At night you can't see beyond 1 square unless you have a torch equipped. Night monsters will always receive 1 damage from normal attacks, and will kill other monsters gaining strength in the process. The only way to damage night monsters is by using abilities, which you can use only up to 8 times every floor (there are other ways to restore you abilities).

- Weapons have 8 proficiency levels, and they gain "experience" when you have them equipped and you kill monsters. Even low level weapons can be powerful enough when they reach level 8.

- There are lots of new monsters with new abilities. Some of their abilities can be beneficial (there are monsters that can meld your items, others can give you more experience if you throw items to them first, etc).

New items and features

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlS1n6dEJq0

In this one, you can see the following new features:

- Shiren can plate himself!! The plate status means he won't receive damage and will be inmune to traps while that status is on effect. (Possible in Shiren 4 as well.)

- Like Shiren DS and Shiren 4, there are lots of Characters wandering in the dungeons, offering their services. At least here is a wandering shopkeeper, a wandering blacksmith, and a bird-like Character that wants you to escort him.

- You can befriend monsters!! Monsters that are your allies won't attack you, instead, they will attack other monsters!! You need to buy special items, called "hearts" to be able to befriend them. Price depends on the monster: per example, the Pacorepkin heart costs 5.000 gitan, but the Flash Bird (bird that heals other monsters) one costs 15.000. Monsters will be your friends while you have that "heart" in your inventory, but if you throw it, they will be as dangerous as they normally are. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86t-wHmMX4E

New items!!

- The happiness Seal: will level up monsters and give 500 exp to party members!!

- The "normal" Scroll can be found now in the dungeons (in shiren 4 they could only be found if a level 2 pterodactyl monster ate your scrolls)

- The Oil Scroll is a new one that must be placed in the floor, it will do 50 damage to the monster who steps on it (or maybe it only works with fire-type monsters like the firepuff?)

- The Bright Scroll is another new one, that also needs to be placed in the floor. It will light the room where it's placed (ideal when it's night-time).

Co-op

https://youtu be/tZ0WXjBAn-Y

Well, according to the video, you can think about features:

- There is only one HP bar for both players, so if both Shiren take damage, the HP bar will decrease with the damage taken by both. The HP bar is probably summed, so the minimum starting HP is 15 + 15 = 30 (this starting HP can be increased by sword and shield melds).

- The multiplayer is focused in rooms filled with monsters and items, but everytime a player tries to exit the room, the partner will be warped behind him (so you can only move freely in the same room).

- Both Players get the same experience for killing monsters, so both players level up equally.

- However, the inventory is different for both players, so this is the key element of strategy.

DEMO 12 -03 2010

By the way, if you have a Japanese wii, you can download a demo of Shiren 5 in your DS and play it.

Trick Items

There are also many trick items that have very similar spelling to the original item, so you have to look closely at what you pick up and use. One example is the rock item. Normally it's "Ishi" but there's an item named "Right" which looks very close in kanji, while the first functions as a normal throwing rock the second is a throwing rock that always flies to the right no matter what. I understand Japanese quite well so I don't think it will be too much of a problem but I can imagine if you don't know the language it would be quite hard to figure out what's going on.

Tag system

The Tag system is back again, but now is in the 3rd village (you need to clear all 3 select-able dungeons before you can reach it).

If you don't know what the tag system is: if you tag a weapon or a shield (3.000 gitan for each),you can get them back in that place, even if you die or you lose it (with some exceptions). If you don't tag your weapon/shield, there is a possibility to get one of them back if you die. Just search in the first village... you might find something....

Bell icons

If you refer to items with a bell in the left side of the name, they are blessed items. They are enhanced items. For example, blessed scrolls can be read twice, blessed weapons do 1,5 more damage....

Warehouse

1) The storehouse near the hotel is like the storehouse of Shiren DS: you can put items in the ground, meld items, use them, etc. If you noticed, you can't use items in town, with the exception of the Jar of Holding (you can insert and withdraw items from it). That storehouse is the only place (besides dungeons) where you can actually use your items.

The other storehouse (the woman in the inn) lets you store up to 80 different items. You can access that storehouse from the main menu to trade items, or giving a reward to someone who has rescued you.

Point Card

2) To get points, you need to have the "point card" item in your main inventory. The point card is obtained in the manekineko town, by speaking to a man in the house of the middle of the town (the one that has a "card" in the map). After that, you need to step in some special visible traps that can be found in some dungeons (including the main one). You can trade the earned points by different rare items in the same house where you obtained your card. The armband of sight is the most expensive item you can trade for items, at the cost of 10.000 points. You will lose all earned points if you lose your card, but you can obtain another one.

Special Stairs

The good part is that, even if you enter a tower, you can go to another one if you find "special stairs" of a different color in any of the floors (except last one, the 7th floor).

Allies

To meet Koharu, go to the Tanuki place. You should see both girls , and an event should happen. And yes... you must always spend 1.500 gitan to make Tao join you (by now...).

Malek86

Yes, I found Koharu. I also got Gen.

One question about Jirokichi. He, uhm, kinda died on the boss floor. Since he is crucial to the plot, what happens if I don't resurrect him and just go on by myself?

gabikun 8 years ago#25

Good question. I resurrected him, so go ahead and try it :P.

Malek86

Ugh, looks like until I finish the story (or at least until Jirokichi is resurrected, but I don't believe it), I can't have more than two other allies with me. Problem is, at this rate, I'm never going to finish the story. Unless I let Koharu transform into a shield and make her level up to absurd levels :P

Regarding that, how does Koharu gain levels? I have had her as a shield for some floors, but she's still level 1, and doesn't seem to gain any green bars.

gabikun 8 years ago#27

You can level her up as any other weapon or shield, but it takes longer than a normal weapon (the raise herbs are helpful here). The good part is that, if you level her up as a weapon, she will be at the same level as a shield.

However, I don't suggest to level her up to level 2, because *SPOILERS* if you do, and you finish the main story, an event will happen and you will lose Koharu, Okon and Gen as party members until you finish a bonus dungeon * END OF SPOILERS*

gabikun 8 years ago#29

Eventually you must do it... Level up Gen and Okon as much as you can, because in that bonus dungeon they will join you to fight a boss (and you can't level them up if they aren't there, can you?)

What sucks even more is that a special bonus dungeon will be temporally "locked" until you finish that dungeon. And it's the one that uses the Friend-monster feature, which is one of the most interesting new features.

VITA

New Dungeons

There are many new dungeons on the vita version. Those dungeons are available from the "dungeon center" on the nekomaneki town (the town where shiren always starts when he fails o succeeds a dungeon).

- Hunter dungeon: Items can't be found on the floor, even if there are monster houses. However, monsters' drop rate is increased. So you need to kill monsters in order to obtain items to survive.

- Friend Scroll dungeon: The only scroll that is found on the dungeon is this scroll. When read in front of a monster, it disappears and can drop its heart on the floor (there is a 50 % chance to miss, in this case your HP is halved). When you have a monster's heart in your inventory, all monsters from that species will be your friends and will attack other monsters.

- Monster House dungeon: The rate of monster houses in this dungeon is very high (you will always start in a big room monster house at first floor)

- Trap dungeon: you can pick traps and all of them will only work on monsters (unless you trigger them on purpose). You can only receive experience from monsters when they are killed by traps.

- Field Bandit dungeon: lots of field bandits inhabit here. There is only one item on every floor, who will find it first?

- Special Riceball dungeon: The only riceballs that can be found here are special riceballs. Every time you eat one, you gain an additional benefit that will help you.

- Aura dungeon: All monsters have aura, and shiren will gain his "super shiren" aura very easily.

- 2 hit dungeon: Coming from shiren 4, in this dungeon the first hit will turn shiren/monster's HP to 1, and a hit with HP 1 will be an automatic defeat.

- Slumber dungeon: The night dungeon from Shiren 4 is back. Always night in here.

- Suffer dungeon: There are no healing items in this dungeon.

- Pickpocket dungeon: Lots of monsters of the pickpocket family. The only weapon and shield you can find here is the "gold eater" ones. Every time you hit or receive a hit with those weapons or shields, you will gain additional attack/defense, but money will be wasted.

I think there are more dungeons, but I haven't my vita with me at this moment so I can't specify which ones.

Saves

The game "autosaves" when you finish a dungeon (maybe even when you go to the next floor when using the stairs, but I'm not sure). That means all new collectives (such as earned abilities, things registered in your monster and item books, or trophies) will be there if you "close" the system without saving when you are in Nekomaneki town.

That means that switching off the system without saving if you have 45 hours in the game won't make you start over. All cleared dungeons will remain cleared, and the adventure log will still have all discovered abilites, items and monsters. You will lose all items and money on hand, though. I did it once when I was in a hurry so I know it works like this.

However, if you switch off the system without saving when you are in a dungeon (or before using the stairs to the next floor), all new collectives or new monsters/items you earned in that dungeon won't be saved.

The game also autosaves when you leave things on the storehouse (the one where you put items on the floor, not the one where you talk to the lady).

Character Dialogue

"Lady" Met on floor 3 of Destiny Trial

Lady:

Oh? Are you also wandering around in search of a new you?

Lady:

A place anywhere but here...

A completely different me...

Lady:

Looking for happiness in a world that's unlike the one I'm in...

Lady:

I've long forgotten how long I've wandered around in this labyrinth called life...

Lady:

What do you think? Do you think I'll find what I'm looking for?

(Yes)

Lady:

I see.... Thank you... Just hearing that from you reassures me enough to continue my journey.

Tao Met on Tower of Fortune Entrance

  • I am Tao. I'm a part-time guide for the Tower of Fortune.
  • Do you wish to challenge the Tower of Fortune? Then I, Tao shall be your guide.
  • The Tower to the left is the Tower of the Past.
  • The denizens there aren't so strong. I would recommend starting there.
  • In the Center we have the Tower of the Present.
  • The monsters there are a bit more fierce so I'd suggest tackling the Tower of the Past first...
  • Collect some strong weapons and equipment before you head to the Tower of the Present.
  • Finally, on your right is the Tower of the Future.
  • That one's tough. You can start here if you want, but unless you know what you're doing, that's not a great idea.
  • I strongly recommend against going into that one first... Well, that's what they usually say.
  • Well, that ends the free section of the tour. Would you like to hire me, Tao as your guide?
  • If you hire me as a guide, I'll join you as an ally, and it'll be a huge help to you!
  • No need to be shy. My guide fee is a mere (Icon) 1,500. What do you say? Hire Tao
  • Then it's settled. We'll meet up on site. We'll meet again soon! You better be sure to make it to where I am! Tao joined you!
  • Koppa: Hey Tao. I'm Koppa. This is my partner, Korra.
  • Tao: Got it. Korra and Koppa. Nice to meet you both.
  • Koppa: She's a weirdo...
  • So we can enter any of the three towers? It's probably best if we started with Tower of the Past. Let's go [player] Refuse

Okon

Met me on adventure 5 outside the hotel. Says she's there to avenge her father and was separated from her younger sister. Disguised as a fox and caught in a trap in the Tower of the (Past?). Thanked me for saving her (3?) adventures later and mentioned she could turn into monsters but at the moment can only turn into a Blade Bee.
