Druin (Japanese: まどうし) is a monster in Super Famicom Torneko's Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon(UT) - This is an unofficial translation..

Druin are humanoid spellcasters wearing large brown robes with hoods, covering their entire body and face, except for their eyes and one green-skinned hand.

They wield a staff, most likely a Sleep Staff, that they use to cast spells and bash Torneko.

Monster Ability

Aside from Monster Houses, Druin always spawn in a state identical to the Paralysed state. They will never wake up from Torneko entering or leaving rooms as well as standing near them. Only an attack, throwing a projectile or waving a Staff can wake them up.

Magicians have a 25% chance to put Torneko to sleep for 5 turns at melee range instead of using their regular attack. They have no limitation on this Special Ability and can send Torneko immediately back to sleep the turns he wakes up several times in a row.

Effect when Sealed

When Sealed, Druin will no longer attempt to put Torneko to sleep, instead relying entirely on their melee attacks.

Combat Strategy

Druin are a very tough fight for an early monster. They have high Defense Power combined with high HP making them very bulky. Their Attack Power isn't as impressive, only beating out Mommonja by 2 points, but with the ability to put Torneko to sleep, they can get many opportunities to attack. These stats are balanced by their passive state, leaving to the player the choice of engaging or ignoring them. They shouldn't be underestimated, even if Torneko has leveled up a few times and found a Shield and/or a Sword in the first few Floors of the dungeon. This is especially true for the More Magic Dungeon(UT) - This is an unofficial translation. where the player can't bring any Items from the vault to start already geared up.

Because of their stats and ability, it's tempting to leave Druin alone. However their high item drop rates and high Experience yield compared to early monsters can be exploited to gain level up quickly, and stock up on items for later floors. Because they're passive by default, players can carefully plan their attack to maximize their chance of success :

  • Never engage Druin with other monsters in the same room. Being put to sleep with other monsters targeting you is a quick way to faint. The player may want to first deal with all the roaming monsters on a floor and deal with the Druin last because of this.
  • Fire projectiles such as Arrows at Druin from afar. Spare Swords and Shields Torneko doesn't have a use for are ideal for this, and avoid using more valuable items. Projectiles have a 1/8 chance to miss, so Torneko should ideally have more projectiles than necessary to defeat the Druin. For the same reason he should stand the furthest away possible from his target, the maximum range of projectiles being 10 tiles. If the Druin drops a useful item on death, Torneko will not only get a lot of experience for early levels but also a net positive for his inventory. In case Torneko gets unlucky and misses repeatedly, it can be a good idea to keep a damaging or status item as a plan B.
  • If the player doesn't have the necessary projectiles or engaging the Druin is too risky, status inflicting items such as a Panic Herb can be used. This will consume an item with no guarantee of getting one back, so lower-value item should be used in priority. This is still worth it for the Experience when Torneko is at low levels, and the Druin may drop a better item than the one you used.
  • Use items that deal damage to Druin. Using Flame Herbs or Bang Scrolls should be avoided as they're better suited against stronger threats and large amounts of monsters. However, Thunder Staves deal 18 - 22 damage at range, have repeated uses, and can't miss, making them a great way to deal with them.
  • Once Torneko's level starts getting high enough and he's equipped with a relatively strong Shield and Sword, facing Druin heads-on becomes viable. This is very dependent on the specifics of the current Adventure and should be judged on a case-by-case basis by the player. If a Wakeful Ring is found, fighting Druin becomes much safer and can be attempted even at low levels with weak equipment.
