Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team is the first main video game in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series. It was released in two versions with slightly different content, on two different platforms.
In addition to their original platforms, both versions were available on the Wii U Virtual Console before being shut down on March 27, 2023. Red Rescue Team alone is available for rental through the Nintendo Classics' Expansion Pack subscription.
Red and Blue Rescue Team is a 2D, top-down, sprite-based Pokémon world. The Hero is a human-turned-Pokémon who befriends a local and forms a Rescue Team together.
They go on numerous adventures, represented in-game by "Jobs" where they rescue fellow Pokémon from Mystery Dungeons, bring them items, escort them to their loved ones or friends, and fight hostile Pokémon and collect loot in said dungeons.
Dungeon gameplay is turn-based, while gameplay in the overworld is free-flowing; however, town characters tend not to move like their dungeon counterparts.
The main story features numerous boss fights and dungeons, where players level up and retain their levels for subsequent adventures. Throughout the story, they unravel the mystery of how the Hero character became a Pokémon and save the world.
Post-credits, new features and mechanics are unlocked, such as evolution, level-reset dungeons, and traps. Additionally, new items are introduced, new Friend Areas, new bosses, and a continuation of the plot. 386 Pokémon, including 28 forms of Unown, can be recruited or evolved.
