Original thread title: SNES vs DS

Posted Anonymously on Feb 2 2012, 6:01 PM EST

I have not found a page/thread discussing the differences between the 2 game versions, I understand the wiki is about the DS version, but the DS version seems to have only little changes from the snes one (mostly graphics) I think it would be great to have a page for ppl playing the snes version listing the changes that were made so that they know what to filter from the site. I opened this thread so we can discuss the changes all in one place for it to be easy for me (or someone with better english knowledge) to create the page.

im playing the snes version (with the aeon genesis translation), I guess most of you guys use the DS one so if you answer some of my questions it will be easy for me to make a list.

The name of the monsters and weapons are not the same but most of the time Its easy to know what is what. ex : a mamel , a mamul... so I think we should focus only on gameplay elements

first thing I noticed that is not in the snes version is the possibility to go back in floors before the 15th floor, the only option when reaching the end of any floor is "Go on" and "Ignore". So there is no "easy" farming. correct me if im wrong (I really hope I am lol)

also there is no way of getting saved (obviously) so you always loose everything, no tricky "free" item tricks with rescuing passwords

I havent made it to the 30 F yet so I dont know if the secret dungeons unlock the same way after beating the main dungeon but ill die over and over again until I do lol.

The snes version seems even harder than the DS one btw, so if u guys completed the DS game and want a challenge, try it out

snes : The jars are also always unidentified when picked up, and going into a village wont identify them, you need a scroll or a jar to identify every item other than swords/shields.

there is the possibility to name unidentified items tho, so if you use a staff and see that it paralyses the monsters and name it "para" then if you pick up another unidentified staff with the same effect it will have the name "para" too, very useful to save some identifying scrolls. (or is that in the DS version too ?)

btw im the anonymous thread starter :P

I have not played the ds version, so I will speak only from my observations of the wiki. I also have not beaten the game, I've only gotten to lv.18 (60+ tries) as of this message.

Scrolls are always unidentified. The translation names for them are different too. I have not run across all the scrolls, but walk throughs / this site uses different names for the scrolls, so you might be wondering how they match up. Also its really important to know what they are called for blank scrolls. It also seems some of these scrolls are not in the super famicom version because the negeative ones would be known on pick up...

Air Bless Scroll - Heaven
Blank Scroll - Same
Blastwave Scroll - Airslash
Destruction Scroll
Earth Bless Scroll - Earth
Extraction Scroll
Great Hall Scroll - Bigroom
Hands Full Scroll
Monster Scroll
Plating Scroll - Blessing??? (Maybe)
Power Up Scroll - Same
Riceball Scroll
Sanctuary Scroll - Haven (I think... I only used it once for fei's thing)
Scroll of Blessing - Purify
Scroll of Chains
Scroll of Confusion - Same
Scroll of Explosion
Scroll of Haste
Scroll of Identity - Same
Scroll of Light - Same
Scroll of Need - Crisis
Scroll of Removal - Genocide
Scroll of Silence
Scroll of Sleep - Slumber
Scroll of Traps
Super Trap Scroll
Wandering Scroll

Not sure if this is a ds or a super famicom version. But if you identify something and put it in the warehouse it becomes unidentified again next playthru. This includes weapons and jars. So please do not waste your identify scrolls on a jar, only to put it right back in the warehouse. I suggest being very organized and just remember what pots are in your warehouses...

Fei's puzzles loops after you complete all 50 (I guess if you haven't beaten the main game). Fei's puzzles in the super famicom version also appear to be different , I distinctly remember the 50th puzzle's map making a "?!" and having no enemies, just equipping an armband that allows the secret areas to be discovered by walking near it and allowing you to walk over water. The first puzzle is certainly different in the Super famicom version its simply walking diagonally across water and showing you can't walk diagonally along solid structures.

I want to say that the "team mates" come far less in the SFC version. In my 60+ playthrus I have have o-ryu like twice, had the blind dude twice, my brother dude 3 times... I remember reading in the ds version "tips" section to rely heavily on your teammates in the lower levels... I never see them sadly enough, cause o-ryu is a fuggin bad ass and she only dies when I get separated from her. Maybe I just don't know where to find them to ask them to join or something...

I guess I have not been playing long enough to unlock some of the npcs like the traveling smithy and the smithy's apprentice, I would say its a possibility that they are not in the SFC version.

These aren't gameplay changes per say, just some of my observations.
