The player character is chosen at the beginning of Nintendo Switch Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX, and is the main protagonist in the plot. In the beginning of the game, you are given a Personality Test. This will involve random questions with each category leaning towards a particular personality type. Once the player has been asked all eight questions, they will be given a final question that simply asks for their gender. Once this has been answered, the results are all tallied and their final personality and resulting Pokémon is determined.

The player will then be given a Pokémon relating to the personality type that they scored highest in. In the event of a tie between multiple personality types, one will be chosen randomly out of those the test-taker scored highest in. Finally, the player's choice of gender dictates which of two Pokémon they will get for that personality.

Differences from Red and Blue Rescue Team

The player can choose their Pokémon if they don't want the Pokémon chosen from the personality test, such as they can in Nintendo 3DS Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon. Type restrictions and gender exclusives were removed in the remake. In addition to it, the player can choose the gender of the Pokémon.
