I've contributed an enormous amount of content to shiren.wikifoundry.com over the years (starting back when it was called Wet Paint). On the one hand, you can't really complain too much about something that's free, and I'm definitely grateful to whoever set up the Shiren wiki site. It may be costing someone some money to keep it up, or if not money, then definitely time and lots of it, and I definitely appreciate whatever time and money has been put into it.

But OTOH, it's just not stable enough. I've been locked out of logging in / editing for over a week now. I've tried reporting the problem in multiple ways, but have not received a response. I assume (hope?) the owners/admins are just overwhelmed and can't respond right now. (I hope that's true because some alternatives are worse, such as the site just plain being abandoned.) Over and above simply being able to log in now, I've experienced several periodic outages, it's not well supported on my main browser (Safari), and I've had to work around some problems (e.g. putting a period for every blank line).

I don't own or speak for the site, but I'm wondering what the real owners or other consumers would think of moving the content to a different wiki site. I have no idea which sites, if any, would be both well-supported yet perfectly free. gamepedia.com looks interesting as it's video-game specific, I like the content of other video game wikis there, and it appears to be free. (I'd love it if gamefaqs.com supported wikis directly! But I have no belief that will happen any time soon.)

Thoughts?

No one was able to log in to wikifoundry, to any wiki not just the Shiren wiki, for over 4 weeks. (I don't remember the exact day it started but it was well before I opened this topic.) Someone finally responded to one of my emails about a week ago, and the problem was finally resolved yesterday. I can log in to the existing wiki and edit again. Yay!

Safari is not perfectly supported on WikiFoundry. You can add and delete text but most of the WYSIWYG controls are missing. (At least it fails gracefully: the controls that don't work are not shown.) I do most of my editing via Chrome, as WikiFoundry's full set of WYSIWYG controls work fine with Chrome. The site is still buggy over and above that, but at least full editing works on Chrome.

That being said, I'm devoting my efforts to migrating the content elsewhere. I plead my case with some folks at Gamepedia.com and they made a wiki for us for the Shiren series! It's *way* better supported than WikiFoundry. It's also a modern wiki system a lot like Wikipedia. They wouldn't just create a site for anyone, so I'm pleased they accepted my petition. :^) In any case, Nerthing and I are working to fix up the layout and migrate the content. I have a ton of small things I'd like to add/update about the wiki but am holding off until we can at least replicate the best stuff from Shiren 5 to the new site.

Before this topic gets locked, I just wanted to say that at least two of us are actively working on migrating the wiki content. I'm focusing on migrating Shiren 5 location pages first, as I put a lot of time into those pages. I expect to be done migrating these pages in about a week, maybe two, as I'm updating and standardizing them a bit as I go. And the new wiki has a new location strategy page for Rousing Paradise!

Have you thought on doing a guide to this website too? I usually see wikifoundry on my smartphone but gamefaqs has an unofficial app that you can use to see any writen faq as long as it's not html. It requires time.

I since dropped my spanish guide for front mission ds since life situations happen and i wish i could still make it in the future but i really don't know when :(

I plan to stick to wiki format, so hopefully others will contribute and over time, the wiki will keep improving faster. At least that's the theory. I'm not sure who else is interested in adding to the wiki.

All content about Shiren 5 Locations has now been migrated to the new site. Check it out!

https://shiren.gamepedia.com/Shiren_5/Locations

Specific changes:

  • Spiffy new format + better looking overall
  • More standardization across all location pages
  • Every location page has improved content in at least small ways
  • Some location pages have been greatly improved / rewritten
  • Some location pages that were stubs have been filled out (e.g. Rousing Paradise)

Cross links between locations pages are WIP but expected soon.

I estimate we're about 1/3rd of the way done migrating Shiren 5 content specifically.

If you've ever wanted to contribute to a Shiren wiki, please do! Specific asks:

  • Anyone want to clean up the home page and provide better info about the series as a whole?
  • Anyone want to author a page about Shiren 5 as a whole?
  • Anyone want to make a standard layout for a game in the series, and apply that layout to all of Shiren 1 - Shiren 5?
