Dream Pillow(SN) (Japanese: ゆめまくら)[notes 1] is an unused feature in Nintendo Switch/Steam Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island.

In an interview from Nintendo Dream published in March 2024, Keisuke Sakurai revealed that during development, they were considering an additional multiplayer feature besides Rescues and Parallel Play, before the latter replaced it.[1]

On December 11, 2024, Hideyuki Shinozaki developed further into this mode, it would have played similarly to Tetris 99 and Super Mario Bros. 35. Shinozaki also explained that they have given up on this feature because it wouldn't have enough players, and how long it can take players to play through a single dungeon, so they may not try to implement it again unless a Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer series game sells at least about 1 million copies.[2] Although there was no direct confirmation that this feature would be called Dream Pillow, the information seems to match the unused data.

Known Information

Artwork

The files of the base game include menu art in the same style and with a similar filename to those used for Rescues and Parallel Play, presumably for a feature meant to be accessed from the Top Menu just like those two. The filename is bg_top_yumemakura.png.

Music

The music track used for the Select Wanderer's Diary menu (BGM_SYS_YUME_KAISOU) also uses the word "yume" in its internal name, however the menu doesn't use this background art, and it's unknown how the word would relate to Wanderer's Diaries (save files).

Text Files

The game features text files named "yumemakura". There is one in each language, and they're all empty.

Executable Symbols

The following are mentioned in the game's code:

  • DreamPillowScreen
  • ResultDreamPillow
  • ToDreamPillowTopMenuNextProcess
  • ToRetryFromDreamPillowNextProcess
  • DreamPillowWaitClearFinalProcess
  • DreamPillowWaitEndFinalProcess
  • get_DreamPillowNormalColor
  • get_DreamPillowPinchColor
  • get_DreamPillowFlowManager
  • DreamPillowStateDto$$
  • LocalizeKeyYumemakuraParam

Comparisons to Other Games

The Unknown Dungeon from Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team is a feature accessed from the Top Menu, where players leave the console in sleep mode, and if two players meet while the game is running in this mode, items can be obtained. The background artwork of this mode consists of sprites of sleeping Pokémon. It is possible that Dream Pillow was inspired by this feature.

Notes

  1. English name taken from function names. Japanese name taken from filenames, but spelled with Japanese characters.
