Seals, marks or melds are valuable upgrades that can be added to Weapons and Shields, giving them unique abilities. Unlike in later games, there is no limit on the number of seals on an item in Shiren 1.
Seals can be removed by the ability of Grey Slimes and Red Slimes, which will remove any gold-plated seals first before others, but a certain type of weapon will always carry its inherent seal, which cannot be removed. Eg. a Sickle Slayer will always have the [Holy] File:Shiren 1 DS Weapon Seal Ghost.png seal.
When an item is cursed, its seals have no effect.
Melding Jars - How to Add and Combine Seals
A Plating Scroll is the only item that can create a seal from nowhere, all other seals are inherent in certain types of equipment.
Once the Melding Jar has been unlocked by completing the Gaibara's Pottery quest, this Jar can be bought from the Shops in Mountaintop Town. Melding Jars are used to combine Weapons, and Shields together, adding multiple seals to one item.
Weapons and Shields, separately: The first item placed into the jar will absorb all others inserted subsequently, absorbing their upgrade power and any seals.
Limitations
- Placing items other than these into a Melding Jar will have no effect, but will consume one of the jar's slots.
- Items can still be combined even if they are Unidentified.
- Items from a shop that have not been paid for will not combine with other items.
- One Melding Jar can be used to combine multiple types of items together, as long as there are enough slots within the jar.
- If an item with a seal is combined with another item that already contains that seal, there will be no effect and the seal will be wasted.
Removing Items
Items cannot be retrieved from a Melding Jar unless the jar is thrown and breaks, or an Extraction Scroll is used on the jar. Using an Extraction Scroll is considered a waste as it will only conserve a slot in the jar for every item that is removed. E.g. after 5 weapons are combined into one, and it is removed with an Extraction Scroll, there will only be one empty slot for use in the jar.

Examples
For purposes of illustration here are some examples:
1Melding a Hide Shield into an Armor Ward will not give the Armor Ward Slow Hunger - it will only remove the Armor Ward's Increased Hunger effect. You must meld a second Hide Shield into the Armor Ward to give it Slow Hunger.
Accidentally melded a breakable Pickaxe?
Combining the weapon with an unbreakable Pickaxe with the File:Shiren 1 DS Weapon Seal Dig.png seal will remove the File:Shiren 1 DS Weapon Seal Pickaxe.png seal. Adding another unbreakable Pickaxe to the weapon will add the unbreakable seal File:Shiren 1 DS Weapon Seal Dig.png.
