Shiren 4
About the "suck floor" dungeon... That dungeon sucks (literally :P). I didn't any serious attempt to beat it, but I found 2 important tips (that you may already know):
- In shops, the "floor suck" rule don't work. If you kill a monster in a shop, and drop an item, it will be there (use the Mazerun family -melding monster- inside shops).
- If there are no shops, you can still use the Mazerun monster. Just don't kill it. Instead, wait until night/day comes. The monster will disappear and the item will be on the floor waiting for you to pick it up.
Shiren 5
Reviveable party member
In the character section of the official page, you can see a new party member.
He doesn't seem to have ranged or special attacks, but his special feature is that, when he's defeated, you can see a tomb in the place he died (and the monster who killed it leveled up).
If you have healing herbs (any can work) you can resurrect him by throwing that herb to the placed tomb.
Shiren 4 party members
If the party members follow the patterns of shiren 4, they can gain levels by defeating monsters (in shiren 4 they had 10 levels), so maybe he can be useful....
Shiren 5 save slots
I found some interesting things about the new shiren 5:
- First of all, IT WILL HAVE 2 SAVE SLOTS. It seems there were too many complains about only one save data in Shiren DS, DS 2 and 4, so Shiren 5 will have 2 save data slots. A great choice!! You can start again your adventure without erasing previous saves.
Shiren 4-5 connectivity
- About the Shiren 4 and 5 connectivity, it will be limited. In the page, they say they will keep the rescues in Shiren 5 (only with another Shiren 5 cartridge), but you can connect Shiren 4 and Shiren 5 games to send HERBS OF REVIVAL and "REDO" HERBS (the enhanced herb of revival, that will grant the choice to revive or to escape the dungeon when you die) from Shiren 4 to Shiren 5.
PS. In Shiren 5, soaked scrolls revert to the original scroll after a few floors instead of transforming into a blank scroll.
The new features, comparing with the DS version:
- Revamped graphics. They are much better than the DS version. Sprites, not 3D.
- Blessed items, with enhanced abilities (the DS version only had cursed items). (This is conflicted elsewhere)
- Cursed items are split into "cursed" and "sealed". Cursed items are only the equippable items, they can't be unequipped and retain their abilities (good or bad). Sealed items can be equippable or consumable items, equippable items lose their abilities, but can be removed. Sealed consumable items can't be used.
- Day and Night cycle. At night you can't see beyond 1 square unless you have a torch equipped. Night monsters will always receive 1 damage from normal attacks, and will kill other monsters gaining strength in the process. The only way to damage night monsters is by using abilities, which you can use only up to 8 times every floor (there are other ways to restore you abilities).
- Weapons have 8 proficiency levels, and they gain "experience" when you have them equipped and you kill monsters. Even low level weapons can be powerful enough when they reach level 8.
- There are lots of new monsters with new abilities. Some of their abilities can be beneficial (there are monsters that can meld your items, others can give you more experience if you throw items to them first, etc).
New items and features
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlS1n6dEJq0
In this one, you can see the following new features:
- Shiren can plate himself!! The plate status means he won't receive damage and will be inmune to traps while that status is on effect. (Possible in Shiren 4 as well.)
- Like Shiren DS and Shiren 4, there are lots of NPCs wandering in the dungeons, offering their services. At least here is a wandering shopkeeper, a wandering blacksmith, and a bird-like NPC that wants you to escort him.
- You can befriend monsters!! Monsters that are your allies won't attack you, instead, they will attack other monsters!! You need to buy special items, called "hearts" to be able to befriend them. Price depends on the monster: per example, the Pacorepkin heart costs 5.000 gitan, but the Flash Bird (bird that heals other monsters) one costs 15.000. Monsters will be your friends while you have that "heart" in your inventory, but if you throw it, they will be as dangerous as they normally are. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86t-wHmMX4E
New items!!
- The happiness Seal: will level up monsters and give 500 exp to party members!!
- The "normal" Scroll can be found now in the dungeons (in shiren 4 they could only be found if a level 2 pterodactyl monster ate your scrolls)
- The Oil Scroll is a new one that must be placed in the floor, it will do 50 damage to the monster who steps on it (or maybe it only works with fire-type monsters like the firepuff?)
- The Bright Scroll is another new one, that also needs to be placed in the floor. It will light the room where it's placed (ideal when it's night-time).
Co-op
https://youtu be/tZ0WXjBAn-Y
Well, according to the video, you can think about features:
- There is only one HP bar for both players, so if both Shiren take damage, the HP bar will decrease with the damage taken by both. The HP bar is probably summed, so the minimum starting HP is 15 + 15 = 30 (this starting HP can be increased by sword and shield melds).
- The multiplayer is focused in rooms filled with monsters and items, but everytime a player tries to exit the room, the partner will be warped behind him (so you can only move freely in the same room).
- Both Players get the same experience for killing monsters, so both players level up equally.
- However, the inventory is different for both players, so this is the key element of strategy.
DEMO 12 -03 2010
By the way, if you have a Japanese wii, you can download a demo of Shiren 5 in your DS and play it.
Trick Items
There are also many trick items that have very similar spelling to the original item, so you have to look closely at what you pick up and use. One example is the rock item. Normally it's "Ishi" but there's an item named "Right" which looks very close in kanji, while the first functions as a normal throwing rock the second is a throwing rock that always flies to the right no matter what. I understand Japanese quite well so I don't think it will be too much of a problem but I can imagine if you don't know the language it would be quite hard to figure out what's going on.
Challenge Run
Q: What is this?
A: Start a fresh file and get rid of all items and money (excluding the point card) before you go into "Unmei no Komichi" (The path to the three mini-towers). That also means after you beat a mini-tower and are sent back to the starting town, you sell everything and deposit all gitan (again, excluding the point card) before going to the path again.
Q: Can I have allies?
A: Yes, but only if you meet them in-dungeon.
Q: So I could just level up allies, die, and repeat until it's a breeze?
A: No, to prevent that if you die and get sent back to the main town you have to recreate that file and start again.
Q: Can I create personal items before going?
A: No.
Q: You're crazy, this is impossible!
A: It's possible, you just have to think of what you'll need and carry a balance of items for the bosses, tough floors, and have a bit of luck :P
So yeah, try it out if you're up to the challenge. Post your adventures even if you don't make it until the end, I think it would be fun to hear each others' stories.
Tag system
Tag system
The Tag system is back again, but now is in the 3rd village (you need to clear all 3 selectable dungeons before you can reach it).
If you don't know what the tag system is: if you tag a weapon or a shield (3.000 gitan for each),
Bell icons
If you refer to items with a bell in the left side of the name, they are blessed items. They are enhanced items. For example, blessed scrolls can be read twice, blessed weapons do 1,5 more damage....
VITA
New Dungeons
There are many new dungeons on the vita version. Those dungeons are available from the "dungeon center" on the nekomaneki town (the town where shiren always starts when he fails o succeeds a dungeon).
- Hunter dungeon: Items can't be found on the floor, even if there are monster houses. However, monsters' drop rate is increased. So you need to kill monsters in order to obtain items to survive.
- Friend Scroll dungeon: The only scroll that is found on the dungeon is this scroll. When read in front of a monster, it disappears and can drop its heart on the floor (there is a 50 % chance to miss, in this case your HP is halved). When you have a monster's heart in your inventory, all monsters from that species will be your friends and will attack other monsters.
- Monster House dungeon: The rate of monster houses in this dungeon is very high (you will always start in a big room monster house at first floor)
- Trap dungeon: you can pick traps and all of them will only work on monsters (unless you trigger them on purpose). You can only receive experience from monsters when they are killed by traps.
- Field Bandit dungeon: lots of field bandits inhabit here. There is only one item on every floor, who will find it first?
- Special Riceball dungeon: The only riceballs that can be found here are special riceballs. Everytime you eat one, you gain an additional benefit that will help you.
- Aura dungeon: All monsters have aura, and shiren will gain his "super shiren" aura very easily.
- 2 hit dungeon: Coming from shiren 4, in this dungeon the first hit will turn shiren/monster's HP to 1, and a hit with HP 1 will be an automatic defeat.
- Slumber dungeon: The night dungeon from Shiren 4 is back. Always night in here.
- Suffer dungeon: There are no healing items in this dungeon.
- Pickpocket dungeon: Lots of monsters of the pickpocket family. The only weapon and shield you can find here is the "gold eater" ones. Every time you hit or receive a hit with those weapons or shields, you will gain additional attack/defense, but money will be wasted.
I think there are more dungeons, but I haven't my vita with me at this moment so I can't specify which ones.
Saves
The game "autosaves" when you finish a dungeon (maybe even when you go to the next floor when using the stairs, but I'm not sure). That means all new collectives (such as earned abilities, things registered in your monster and item books, or trophies) will be there if you "close" the system without saving when you are in Nekomaneki town.
That means that switching off the system without saving if you have 45 hours in the game won't make you start over. All cleared dungeons will remain cleared, and the adventure log will still have all discovered abilites, items and monsters. You will lose all items and money on hand, though. I did it once when I was in a hurry so I know it works like this.
However, if you switch off the system without saving when you are in a dungeon (or before using the stairs to the next floor), all new collectives or new monsters/items you earned in that dungeon won't be saved.
The game also autosaves when you leave things on the storehouse (the one where you put items on the floor, not the one where you talk to the lady).
