Turns (Japanese: ????) are central to the gameplay system used by Super Famicom Torneko's Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon(UT) - This is an unofficial translation. inside Dungeons. Both Torneko and monsters use this turn system. Whenever Torneko ends his turn, monsters get to take a turn of their own. During their turns, Torneko or monsters can perform actions. Actions can be performed once per turn, several times, or as many time as the player wants depending on the type of actions and other factors.

Turns may pass automatically for Torneko or monsters if they're incapacitated in some way, such as being Asleep.

The number of times an action can be performed in a turn may be changed by Status Conditions or as part of a monster Special Ability.

Turn Order

Torneko always takes his turn before all the monsters when first arriving on a floor.

After Torneko has taken his turn, monsters take their turns following a set order:

  • Monsters with double Movement Speed and/or double Attack Speed perform their bonus action first, in the order they spawned in on the floor.
  • Then all monsters take their regular action, in the order they spawned in on the floor. If a monster is Slowed, then it will only perform an action if it hasn't taken one on the turn before.
  • Finally Torneko gets to take his turn again.

If Torneko spends his turn doubling his Movement Speed and/or Attack Speed, for example by consuming an Agility Seed, he will randomly either end their turn immediatly or get to perform his bonus action in the same turn.

Turn Based Event

Torneko's HP recovers every turn, according to the following formula:

Temporary Status Conditions given to Torneko or monsters last specific number of turns:

A new monster spawn on a floor every 64 turns.

Actions

Torneko

What the game considers an action for Torneko and whether they end his turn is not straightforward. Generally input from the player translates to actions, but some inputs must be repeated several time to count as an action and some consecutive input will only count as one action.

The list of actions and their conditions is detailed below:

Actions Controls Times per turn
Walk one tile in the selected direction D-Pad, if held continuously every input is counted Once, does not spend the turn if action fails
Walk in the selected direction until you meet an obstacle B+D-Pad Once
Change the faced direction. Y + D-Pad, if held continuously only the last input is counted Unlimited
Attack in the selected direction A Once
Pass the turn. A+B, if held continuously every input is counted Once
Attempt to fire an arrow with no arrow equipped L, consecutive input only count as one Unlimited
Fire an equipped arrow L Once
Use an item A in inventory menu Once
Attempt to grab an item with no item on the tile A in menu, consecutive input only count as one Unlimited
Grab an item A in menu Once
Drop an item A in inventory menu Once
Naming unidentified items 10 times A in inventory menu 10 times,
if this action would cause an earthquake it is not counted
Unlimited
Sort item with no identical items besides the first one Y in inventory menu, consecutive input only count as one until another action is performed,
if this action would cause an earthquake it is not counted
Unlimited
Sort item with at least two identical items besides the first one Y in inventory menu, consecutive inputs are counted,
if this action would cause an earthquake it is not counted
Unlimited
Use a stair tile to go down a floor A Once

Any other input not on this list are not considered actions by the game. They can be done an unlimited amount of times in a turn and do not count for action based timers such as Earthquakes or Belly Deterioriation.

Monsters

Actions taken by monsters are straightforward and always end their turn.

Monsters can only perform 1 of 3 actions :

  • Attempt to move to an adjacent tile. This action can fail if a monster attempts to walk into a wall while Confused but it will still spend their turn.
  • Attack Torneko at melee range. If a monster Attack Power is 0, then the fight log will say the monster does nothing, but this is the same action as attacking.
  • Use their Special Ability.

Action Based Event

The timer before Earthquakes happen is based on the number of actions taken by Torneko. The first earthquake occurs after 1534 actions, the second earthquake occurs after 1574 actions and the final earthquake occurs after 1614 actions, bringing Torneko to the Floor below.

Torneko's Belly lowers by 1% everytime he does 10 actions.

When Torneko is starving with 0% Belly, his HP decreases by 1 everytime he does an action.

Effect of Status Conditions

Some status conditions affect how turns and actions are executed :

  • Sleep and Paralysis incapacitate Torneko and monsters by passing their turn automatically, without any required input from the player. These turns still counts for turn based event such as HP recovery. However the timer of the Confused and Misled status will stop counting when sleeping or paralysed and starts again after these status ends.
  • The Double Speed status doubles the number of time an action can be performed by Torneko or monsters durign a turn.
  • The Slowed status will only allow monsters to perform an action if they haven't done one during their last turn. Otherwise it will pass their turn automatically.

Some Special Abilities affect how monster actions are executed :

  • Monsters with double Movement Speed can perform their movement action twice in the same turn. Because this bonus action happens before their regular action they can move first then attack on the same turn.
  • Monsters with both double Movement Speed and double Attack Speed can perform their movement action or their attack action twice in the same turn.
