Main Menu Icons have been a gameplay element of the Mystery Dungeon series since the original release of Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer for the Super Famicom. They denote the completion of certain achievements in the game.
The original Japanese release of The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate on the Nintendo DS has 21 title screen icons, displayed in 3 rows of 7. In the English version of the game's ports, the icons are in the same order but displayed in 2 rows of 11. This may simply be the most convenient layout for the icons given the different aspect ratios of each of the devices' screens.
