Turns (Japanese: ????) are central to the gameplay system used by Template:GameTitle inside dungeons. Both Torneko and monsters use this turn system. Whenever Torneko spends his turn, monsters get to take a turn of their own. To spend their turns, Torneko or monsters can perform actions. Actions can only be performed once per turn, several times, or as many time as the player wants depending on the type of actions and many other factors.

Turns may be skipped for Torneko or monsters if they're incapacitated in some way, such as being Asleep.

The number of times an action can be performed in a turn may be changed by Status Conditions inflicted through various means or as part of a monster Special Ability.

Turn Order

Torneko always takes his turn before all the monsters when first arriving on a floor.

After Torneko has taken his turn, monsters take their turns following a set of rules:

  • Monsters with double Movement Speed and/or double Attack Speed perform their bonus action first, in the order they spawned in on the floor.
  • Then all monsters take their regular action, in the order they spawned in on the floor. If a monster is Slowed, then it will only perform an action if it hasn't taken one on the turn before.
  • Finally Torneko gets to take his turn again.

If Torneko or a monster spend their turn doubling their Movement Speed and/or Attack Speed, for example by consuming an Agility Seed, they will randomly either end their turn immediatly or get to perform their bonus action in the same turn.

Actions

Torneko

What the game considers an action for Torneko and whether they consume a turn is not straightforward. Generally input from the player translates to actions, but some inputs must be repeated several time to count as an action and holding input down can save on actions. The timer before earthquakes occur is based on the number of actions taken by Torneko and not the number of turns spent. The first earthquake occurs after 1534 actions, the second earthquake occurs after 1574 actions and the final earthquake occurs after 1614 actions, bringing Torneko to the floor below.

The list of actions and their conditions is detailed below:

Action Input conditions Times per turn
Walk one tile in the selected direction Every input on the D-Pad Once
Walk several tiles in the selected direction until you meet an obstacle Every B + D-Pad input Once
Attacking in the selected direction Every A input Once
Skip turn Every A+B input Once
Change the faced direction Every Y input, holding input counts as only one action Unlimited

Monsters

Actions taken by monsters are straightforward and always consume a turn, even if they fail.

Monsters can only perform 1 of 4 actions :

  • Attempting to move to an adjacent tile. This action can fail if a monster attempts to walk into a wall while Confused.
  • Attacking Torneko at melee range.
  • Do nothing. Monsters will only perform this action if they're unable to do anything else.
