Unidentified (Japanese: 未識別) items in Etrian Mystery Dungeon are items whose name and effects, and number of uses for Sigils, are hidden. Scrolls and Sigils are unidentified in Mysterious Forest and Phantom Depths. Bottles are unidentified in Phantom Depths. The names used to hide the real names of items are random and are unkept from one dungeon exploration to the next, however once an item is identified or renamed all items of the same type will be known.
Tips to identify items
General Tips
Assess Scrolls can be used to identify one item and has a low chance of identifying all items. If you find a Red Lion Shoppe you can try to sell items to know their selling price. It can be used to reduce the number of possibilities on the identity of the object. At the end of the dungeons, when entering Aslarga, every items in the inventory will be identified.
Bottles
A way of knowing the effect of a Bottles without using it, is to throw a bottle that you have spares of at a monster and renaming it when you know what are its effects.
Scrolls
When using a Scroll, every other scroll of the same type will be identified. To reduce risks, scrolls should be read while standing on a staircase so you can move to another floor. Moreover, every Scrolls with negative effects have a selling price of 50 Ental.
Sigils
Sigils all have the same selling price, so the only way to identify them without the Assess Scroll is to use them on a monster and renaming the Sigil when you know what are its effects.

List of names that can be used to hide the real name of unidentified items. As The names used to hide the real names of items are random and are unkept from one dungeon exploration to the next this cannot be used to identify items.

Its contents alter upon entering a labyrinth. Impossible to identify without an Assess Scroll.

Its language alters upon entering a labyrinth. Impossible to identify without an Assess Scroll.
Sigils
Its surface alters upon entering a labyrinth. Impossible to identify without an Assess Scroll.
