When you inevitably die and lose everything while playing the story mode, the Portal dungeon is by far the best place to start building up a new set of equipment. There's a few different methods for building up equipment based on which items you've found and unlocked. About one third of the way through the story you unlock the ability to use Dragon Orbs which can allow you to quickly grow new weapons to get back to where you were before you died.
