Draft:Shiren 5 Vita:Binary Shield Type
This article is a draft relating to Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate (Vita) for the PlayStation Vita. |
The Binary Shield family of Shields was introduced in Shiren 5. It bears the Bit rune, which decreases the damage you take by 50% when the final digit of your HP is 0 or 1. Although the in-game description doesn't state it, this effect actually improves as the shield levels up. When the Binary Shield reaches its 6th level, the Grt. 0/1 Shield, it gains the Magi-Twister rune, which makes you take a fixed 10 damage from magic bolts rather than the normal effect. This shield does not resonate with any other piece of equipment.
Tips for use
As long as you can manage your HP to end in 0 or 1, the damage reduction is better than that of the Day Shield Type. And until the Day Shield levels up enough, its weak Diurnal effect is less reliable protection than the Binary Shield's higher base defense power, even without Bit.
Having a bracelet that can detect monsters on the floor lets you prepare your HP for when you run into them. Runes that increase HP can allow you to manage your HP by equipping and unequipping the sword/shield. It is good to have the last digit at 0 when you go down the stairs, because then you can start the next floor with a few turns of Bit protection before it goes up to 2.
The Binary Shield will reach level 6 and unlock the Magi-Twister rune faster than it takes the Plain Targe Type to get to level 8. The Swap Shield Type comes with this rune innately, but it only appears in certain dungeons, so it is good to be able to unlock this rune for free. It might even be the more convenient source of the Magi-Twister rune to put on other shields.
It is also the only source of the Bit rune to put on other shields. As a rune, it's worth having even if you don't pay attention to the last digit of your HP.
