Day and Night (Japanese: 昼と夜) is a gameplay element introduced in Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer 4 - The Eye of God and the Devil's Navel. In dungeons, the game will feature an icon in the [Research required] corner of the screen, indicating the time of day. Additionally, the background music will change to match the time of day.
Day
During the day, normal monsters will spawn, and Techniques, another new gameplay mechanic, can't be used. Normal attacks with weapons will work on monsters, as per the norm with the series.
Night
New Night Monsters will spawn; with a few exceptions, all attacks will be converted to 1 damage. To defeat them, the player has to rely on Techniques or items such as Staves. Some monsters will attack other monsters as if they're Confused or under the Berserk Status Abnormalities. The player is only able to read Scrolls if they have a Torch equipped, or use other light sources. Without a torch, only the 8 tiles around Shiren will be visible, making it difficult to view items or Stairs.
Night monsters deal a higher attack than normal monsters, however, all items they drop will be Blessed, making it a high-risk, high-reward situation to fight them.
