I had no knowledge of this at all.
This would be right around the time Enix USA was gutted leaving only Paul Handelman as the caretaker.
They were resurrected after NOA localized N64 Mischief Maker.

In PS1 Torneko the Last Hope, the VN-like part in the JP original was cut. I wish they would've told me it was getting cut before I did it entirely.
I also mistranslated the two most powerful swords which had to be melded to reach their full potential.

Cut as in removed entirely from the code? Or cut as in it's inaccessible and could theoretically be reenabled.
Do you have the names of the two swords? What the mistranslations are and what they should be? We currently lack gameplay articles for the game.

I'm not sure how they cut it. It could very well still be in the code, but disabled. Not sure if they dropped in my translated text.
I may've misremembered the sword. I think it was Sealed Sword or something, and it was to be paired with Sealed Shield for max ATK/DEF.

I had to find the sun-faded strategy guide which sat undisturbed on my office bookshelf for decades.

Why was the VN part cut from the game?
Could have introduced people to the genre early on, such a shame they had too....

Wait, it wasn't so much a VN, but more an RPG sort of an event where you wandered around talking to goldfish and tools or something. It was strange and didn't have anything to do with the rest of the game.

Oh, yeah i could see why but i personally feel ripping content out the game cuz it didn't fit with the rest of the game felt low-key like i got ripped-off considering i'm paying full price for less stuff in the game that was suppose to originally be there no matter if it's dumb..

Not attacking you or anything of the sort but just my own personal philosophy in a way, i'm sure it was a necessary move just for it to sell at the time and that's completely understandable.

No worries, I was annoyed it was removed too.
It was such a weird thing that really had nothing to do with the overall game.

I'd started work on PS1 DQ4 when that project was cancelled.
Torneko was on the verge of cancellation when I stepped up and did it in the three weeks left on the deadline and the remaining budget after the original translation team fucked it up (they get credit on wiki too).

What wiki did they get credit on?

Oops, never mind, I guess the Wiki page was updated.
It was credited to the original Vancouver-based translation agency several years ago.

I worked like a cat with its tail on fire the whole time. Enix told George, the localization producer, to shut down the project. But I wanted to bring Torneko over because it's a great game. So I managed to convince him I'll do it within the remaining time and budget.

I guess I had three weeks. I even had to go into surgery on a hyperextended shoulder and spend a night at the hospital. The next day, I convinced my surgeon I was fine and I could rest just as easily at home...and went back to work with an arm in a sling.

I phoned George to let him know, and the first he said without inquiring about my health, "So, you're on time to finish Torneko?" I cursed him out seven ways to heaven, recruited my kids to do copy & pasting, typed with my right hand, and got it done. Fucking heroic.

Only to have Official Playstation Magazine rip it as the "second worst PS game of all time."
Well, fuck you too.
