- I spent 12 - 14 hours/day x 7 days/wk x 11 weeks with them. I got to know them pretty good. Beside the intense deadlines, the finnicky text formats and hyperlinks galore made for a tough technical challenge. Yaya, tooting my own horn here, but that stuff was HARD, man.

- I used the past tense "were" to emphasize the finality of the situation and make it that much more gut-wrenching. Putting it in the past tense makes it a farewell and an explanation. The protag knew this was coming, but they're just as dismayed as their friend when it happens. I love economy in writing. Good, impactful writing's not always contingent on five-buck words.
