Summary

Resonances are basically equipment combos. When you have certain sets of items equipped, you get certain effects / benefits.

All known resonances require 2 different items in different categories to be equipped. This is usually a sword and a shield, but can also involve torches and bracelets. All known effects are good. The most common effect is to be able to equip two bracelets at the same time. There is no known way to have multiple resonances in effect at the same time, though a single item can be involved in multiple resonance pairs.

Resonances do not appear in your game UI until you activate them for the first time. After that, the description of the items involved changes to tell you about the resonance it can make with its partner item. Consequently, it's not 100% clear that all possible resonances have been found. Shiren 5 gives some hints about some resonances (e.g. from Superspy Daisaku), but there are definitely many resonances that are not hinted anywhere in Shiren 5. It's possible that other resonances were hinted in Shiren 4, though (a) Shiren 4 was never officially translated into English and (b) given how sparse resonance hints are in Shiren 5 it's doubtful all of them were hinted in Shiren 4 either. (Note that this is very similar to how the game handles Runes and secret pot effects on New Items; a handful of things are hinted, and it seems you can only find the rest by experimentation or possibly via hints in a game that was never published in English.) No one yet has reported doing a massive experiment to try equipping every possible combination of two items to prove that this is the full set of resonances, and no one yet has reverse engineered the game to prove the list is complete either. If by any chance you do find a new resonance, announce it to the world and get credit!
