Shiren 1 DS:Smith
General Information
Smiths or Blacksmiths (Japanese:かじ屋) are primarily town NPCs who provide the valuable service of upgrading weapons in for form of applying bonus points for the fee of 1,000 Gitan. On rare occasions a Blacksmith will return with your weapon saying he'd outdone himself and a bonus of +3 will have been added to the weapon. Should you offer a Cudgel up to be worked on, he'll state that he can't work on wood and requires metal and if you bring him a shield, under normal circumstances, he'll state that he doesn't work on shields.
Locations
Blacksmith's can be found in Bamboo Village and Mountaintop Town. Traveling Blacksmiths can be found wandering from floors 8 - 14 of Table Mountain and will offer the same service for the same price.
Unbreakable Pickaxe
Pickaxes can be used to dig through walls. But they're fragile and break after a short time. If you make the mistake of using a Melding Jar to combine one to your most powerful weapon, the weapon risks being broken should you use it to dig too much. However, there's a workaround to this. If you bring a Pickaxe to a town Blacksmith, he'll ask to hold on to it until your next adventure and when you return, will present you with an unbreakable Pickaxe that can be safely melded to other items without risking breaking.
Smith's Apprentice
The Smiths Apprentice of Bamboo Village is part of a side quest in Shiren 1. She is aspiring to become a great blacksmith, but is lacking in confidence and self-esteem. Shiren helps her get through the apprenticeship and create a valuable friendship along the way. For information on the Smith's Apprentice quest, see The Blacksmith's Apprentice (Quest)
Nintendo DS Exclusives
In the Nintendo DS port if you bring him a fully maxed out Windshield, he'll say he doesn't work on shields before asking Shiren to wait for a moment. When he returns he'll bring a new shield, the Stormward.
If you manage to fully level up a Kabra's Blade and bring it to the Smith, he'll upgrade it to a Kabra Reborn for the usual fee. This is the only way to get the Kabra Reborn and it's the most powerful weapon in the game.
" | "I don't do shields...
Huh? I wonder... if I change that... Hang on for a second." Then he goes in the back, as usual, and returns saying "Whew... I changed the welds to make it stronger. But don't tell anyone, 'cause I normally don't do shields." |
