The Herb of Revival (Japanese: 復活の草) is a herb introduced in the Super Famicom release of Shiren 1. If Shiren has an Herb of Revival in his top level inventory when he dies, he will be automatically revived on the next turn with full health, fullness, and any lost strength returned to the current maximum. This will also transform the consumed Herb of Revival into Weeds. If Shiren is transformed at the moment of death such as being a Riceball or any monster type, the resurrection effect will still succeed as normal. Shiren always reverts to his 'normal' self as he dies. So you will have access to your inventory as normal. The resurrection effect will not function if the Herb of Revival is in a Jar or if the herb is cursed.

Eating this herb normally will restore 5 hunger as usual, but will not impart its resurrection effect unto you, however the game will play a very unique sound along with displaying a unique message to let you know that you consumed one and you should avoid doing that to make use of it. Throwing this herb at Monster's of NPC's will only deal the usual 2 damage.

Tips for use

  • If you do manage to die while carrying an Herb of Revival in a jar, this will unlock Adventure Log entry #62. (Couldn't revive by Herb of Revival."). You'll still be dead, though. An alternative way to get the adventure log entry is if your Revival Herb is Cursed.
  • If you have a Revival herb, take additional care around monsters of the Flutter Fowl and Gaze families as they can easily destroy your herb.
  • Only one Herb of Revival will be consumed at a time if you happen to have more than one in your inventory, and the game will always target your non-cursed ones first.
  • This items ability to fully restore your hunger and lost strength means you can die intentionally to restore those stats if you feel that you need to.
